LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: According to data released by the video-sharing social media platform on Wednesday, December 6, Selena Gomez holds the title of the most popular content creator on TikTok, boasting over 59 million followers.

The singer-actress secured the position as the most popular artist in the United States for 2023 on the app, surpassing Ice Spice, Natalie Jane, Lizzo, Cardi B, NLE Choppa, and Ariana Grande, among other artists who made it into the top 10, as reported by the New York Daily News.

Elsewhere, Gomez seemingly confirmed in a series of Instagram remarks on Thursday, December 7, that she had been dating producer Benny Blanco — a friend and collaborator of her former boyfriend Justin Bieber — for six months.

The star of 'Only Murders in the Building,' who frequently uses viral sounds du jour, leads the group of musicians making the top 10.

Gomez is also recognized as the second-most popular artist worldwide on TikTok, surpassed only by Mexican YouTuber Kim Loaiza and ranking above Blackpink, Shakira, and BTS.

All credit goes to Gomez's video from February, where she prepares for an early trip, amassing over 24 million likes and securing the fourth spot among the most popular trending videos in the United States.

The social media queen's most recent single, a cover of Rema's 'Calm Down', became a hit this spring, propelling her to the top of the Billboard Hot 100.

The song featured in 1.8 million TikTok videos after receiving substantial airplay on New York City’s No. 1 R&B station WBLS.

The year-end rankings on TikTok are notable because Gomez announced in February that she was leaving the platform due to controversy involving Hailey Bieber and Kylie Jenner, as well as taking a vacation from social media.

Gomez said earlier in a TikTok live, "I’m going to be taking a second from social media, because this is a little silly. I’m 30 and am too old for this. But I love you so much and I’ll see you guys sooner than later. I’m just gonna take a break from everything," per People.

Internet splits as Selena Gomez crowned TikTok’s most viewed artist in the US

Following Gomez's victory as TikTok’s most viewed artist in the US in 2023, one set of Internet users supported the singer while others considered it as a 'damage control' amid ongoing drama surrounding her.

One fan took to X (formerly Twitter) to congratulate the singer and wrote: "Congratulations to her, it's been a really good year for her."

A second one added, "Selena Gomez is an excellent lady & she has really done well for herself to attain this Stan,,,,,Congratulation to her"

"Congratulations to her the calm down song really revived her career," chimed in a third supporter.

One more wrote: "Babe has conquered Instagram and now TikTok. An eventful life she’s had as a reigning champ"

Another user said, "No one cares, damage control"

A second one echoed a similar sentiment and added, "The chaos of them releasing this information right now"

"Nobody actually care about this American mid artist to be honest," exclaimed a third one.

"OH YALL MESSY FOR POSTING THIS NOW," noted another one.
