Dan Levy reveals to Jimmy Fallon how losing his grandmother during Covid inspired him to make 'Good Grief'
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: In a heartfelt conversation with Jimmy Fallon on 'The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon', actor and writer Dan Levy shared the emotional journey that inspired his latest project, 'Good Grief'.
Opening up about the loss of his grandmother during the pandemic, Levy delved into the complexities of grief and the profound impact it had on his creative process.
Navigating collective grief
"Well, I lost my grandmother just at the end of the pandemic, and I feel like the pandemic was a tough time for so many of us, and so many people lost loved ones during that time," Levy began, setting the stage for a conversation that would touch on both personal and collective experiences of grief.
Making sense of grief
Levy expressed the challenges of navigating grief during a global crisis, stating, "I was trying to, like, make sense of grief, like, what personal grief meant to me in the wake of, like, a collective grief."
The actor eloquently captured the universal struggle of individuals attempting to understand their emotions amidst the broader backdrop of societal loss and upheaval.
Questioning the process
During the interview, Levy candidly shared the introspective questions that emerged during his grieving process, a sentiment many can relate to.
"And you're asking yourself, are you doing it right? Am I feeling the things I should feel? Am I honoring the person in the way that I feel like I should? All of these questions that I've now come to realize are questions that a lot of us ask when we're going through the process of grief," he reflected.
Birth of 'Good Grief'
Driven by the desire to explore the multifaceted aspects of grief, Levy found solace in channeling his emotions into creative expression.
"I thought, well, this could be a really interesting conversation to have in a movie," he explained.
The actor-writer aimed to create a narrative that centered around friendship as a coping mechanism in the aftermath of loss.
"I wanted to explore the idea of friendship taking front and center in a movie. I hadn't seen that in a long time, so I wanted to make a movie about friendship in the wake of grief," Levy shared with Fallon.
