David Foster celebrates family bonds, admits his 'daughters have embraced Rennie and it's actually great'
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: David Foster is basking in the joy of family bonds despite being the center of recent controversies surrounding his role as a father-of-six.
Speaking to People at Billboard's Golden Globes after-party on Sunday, January 7, the legendary music producer addressed the controversies.
David Foster says 'unique situation' of his family was unplanned
The comments emerged after Foster shared an Instagram clip of his two-year-old son Rennie showcasing his drumming skills to Michael Jackson's 'Rock With You' track on Friday, January 6.
Though the comments flooded with praise for Rennie's talent, one user criticized Foster's parenting. "Lol!!!! He's the dad.....he's also got daughters (he abandoned) older than me," the user wrote in response to the comment from someone else.
The 74-year-old musician told the outlet that he "didn't see" the comments online but took the opportunity to praise his bonding with his five children, Jordan, 37, Erin, 41, Sara, 42, Amy, 50, and Allison, 53.
"My children are great and, obviously, it's a unique situation, probably one that none of us planned for, but my daughters are great, all of them, all five of them are great," Foster said of his daughter Amy coming to his defense.
Explaining that his family is trying to "do our best" to maintain their strong bonds, Foster said his daughters have "embraced Rennie and it's actually great."
"We have a lot of traveling, but we do our best and it's working out really well," he continued.
"My daughters are all self-sufficient. They're all making their own way. They're all doing great. So I'm really proud of all of them and Rennie too. So he's in the spotlight for now," he added.
David Foster says he plans to give his son Rennie 'every opportunity to pursue music'
Foster further talked about Rennie's drumming skills and the recent video of two-year-old developing the skills as seen in the video captured by the musician's wife, Katharine McPhee Foster.
"He's been on the road with us while we toured, my wife and I, and he watched our drummer, JR Robinson, who's an amazing drummer, and he just started watching him when he was like 14, 15 months old, and then he just started playing and banging away and just slowly but surely," he said.
"Then that video that has gone viral is he was just playing in there and I was trying to give him a bit of a lesson and Kat heard it from the other room, so she just walked in. So it's very impromptu," he added.
"Usually, he would stop playing if he saw a camera, but he sort of went, and then he just kept playing. It was kind of cool," he continued.
Foster shared that he would give Rennie "every opportunity" to pursue music if he desires, "but I won't be a zealot about it."
"I'm not going to get crazy about it. If he stops one day, then so be it," he added.
