NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: In a shocking display of apparent historical ignorance, Rudy Giuliani, the former New York City mayor and once-respected lawyer, has managed to stir up a firestorm of outrage on the Internet.

During a recent appearance on a conservative podcast, Giuliani made a tone-deaf comparison between his legal battles and the sham trials conducted during the reigns of Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler and Soviet tyrant Joseph Stalin, as per Newsweek.

The controversial statements were made during Giuliani's guest appearance on the conservative 'Thrivetime Show: The ReAwakening Versus the Great Reset' podcast, hosted on the Rumble platform.

Discussing the legal actions against himself and his former client, Donald Trump, Giuliani said, "These trials, we talk about Hitler or Stalin, these are like the trials you would have during Hitler's era or Stalin's era. Whether it's the one we see in New York or the one that I had and constant threats of trying to put you in jail, like they're doing with President Trump. If you say anything to defend yourself, you could go to jail."

The clip, shared on X (formerly Twitter) by MeidasTouch founder Ron Filipkowski, garnered significant attention, with over 100,000 views.

Giuliani's remarks come in the wake of a recent $148 million defamation case verdict against him, which he has vowed to appeal. The case was filed by Georgia election workers Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss, whom Giuliani falsely accused of engaging in electoral fraud against Trump.

Giuliani subsequently filed for bankruptcy, disclosing his total assets at $10,632,334, with $9.1 million being real estate.

Rudy Giuliani claims Trump supporters are being 'persecuted'

Giuliani didn't stop there, further claiming Trump supporters are being "persecuted or attacked or prosecuted" because "they're afraid of us," adding, "They're afraid that we'll uncover their schemes. Sometimes, their schemes are for money; sometimes, they're for power; and the more it becomes possible that we are going to uncover it, the worse they get."

The former mayor also inflated his own importance, stating, "I'm not as big or important a target as Donald Trump, but I'm pretty important."

Internet voices outrage at Rudy Giuliani's remarks

Giuliani's controversial remarks invited criticism on the Internet. One commenter on X remarked, "Delusional and Dangerous," while another criticized Giuliani, stating, "Rudy has degenerated into nothing more than a desperate hack trying to win DT’s favor."

A third user weighed in, calling Giuliani's statement "Possibly the biggest and most un-American lie he’s ever told. And that’s clearing a high bar." Another commenter asserted, "Rudy is the poster child of public corruption in America now. A fitting end."

A fifth user expressed, "Crooks with voice are our worst nightmare right now, this one should be in jail." Another highlighted Giuliani's historical inaccuracy, stating, "Hitler didn’t conduct 'trials'. His insane lack of historical knowledge is breathtaking."

Someone else quipped, "Rudy Giuliani majored in history at Trump University." Yet another commenter highlighted, "Rudy, once again completely ignorant of history and banking on the fact that Trump supporters are idiots as well. It must be SO EASY just being able to spout any old shite, and knowing that no one on your side will EVER CALL YOU OUT ON IT."
