CALIFORNIA: Rep Zoe Lofgren suggested that candidates running to succeed President Joe Biden on the Democratic ticket be vetted by former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton before competing in a ‘mini-primary’.

In an MSNBC interview, Lofgren said that if Biden were to withdraw from the race, something the congresswoman has already called on him to do, the Democratic Party would need to move quickly to recruit a replacement to run at the top of the ticket, according to the New York Post.

Noting that Vice President Kamala Harris should be considered as a top option, Lofgren said, “There will have to be quick steps. I don’t think we can do a coronation, but obviously the vice president would be the leading candidate.”

She added, “I think kind of a mini primary, maybe a vetting hosted by former presidents, including Obama and Clinton, would be helpful and help focus the attention.”

Notably, in a letter to the president, Lofgren urged Biden to withdraw from the race, as she disclosed on Friday, July 19. “Simply put, your candidacy is on a trajectory to lose the White House and potentially impact crucial House and Senate races down ballot,” she wrote.

She added, “It is for these reasons that I urge you to step aside from our Party’s nomination to allow another Democratic candidate to compete against and beat Donald Trump in the November election.”

Notably, Lofgren is one of the over 30 House Democrats who have pleaded with Biden to give up on running for reelection. The president has not announced his intention to withdraw from the contest.

Zoe Lofgren (D-CA), is aimed at preventing future presidents from trying to overturn election results through Congress and makes reforms to the Electoral Count Act.
