WASHINGTON, DC: Angie Nixon, the Democratic candidate for Senate in Florida, said that Republicans and moderates are getting involved by volunteering and making donations to her campaign, on the grounds that her message is gaining resonance among voters from both parties as she contests the incumbent Republican senator Ashley Moody.

On Friday, October 30, during an appearance on MS NOW's ‘All In,' Nixon talked about the amount of attention her campaign has been getting, including the criticism she has received from President Donald Trump. Host Chris Hayes pointed out that Trump had criticized her when he was in Florida by calling her a "very low IQ person" and a communist. Hayes also stated that the Senate race was a priority for the Republicans.

Nixon remarked that the extent of the attention showed the progress her campaign had achieved even though it had fewer financial resources.

Nixon said her campaign had been making headway despite not having as much money as its opponents.

Host Chris Hayes said, “Donald Trump, of course, was, you know, in Florida today. He attacked you, as he always does.

“He said you were a very low IQ person and a communist. You know, again, this is sort of Mad Libs. He said this about everyone, but you’re definitely on his radar. And this race is on Republicans’ radar.”

The Democratic candidate said she was reaching people by focusing on issues that mattered to them. She also framed her campaign around ending what she described as a “culture of corruption” in Washington.

Nixon said, “Oh yeah, it’s definitely on their radar because they could not believe that someone who didn’t have nearly as much money as they had is actually making headways this way.”

And that just goes to show you that organized people can beat big money. But look, I am going out to “people and really breaking through because we’re talking about things people care about.”

“We’re trying to end this again, this culture of corruption, knowing that Ashley Moody is someone who also is being emboldened and empowered by the insurance industry. And she turned her back on voters and residents across the state during hurricane season and they didn’t get their claims paid out.”

Trump attacks Nixon as Florida Senate race draws attention

She also pointed to the support she said her campaign was receiving from people outside the Democratic Party, describing the involvement of Republicans and moderates as an encouraging sign.

She added, “So when I’m making the case that if they want something different, they want us to end the corruption that’s happening in DC, that they should vote for me.

“That’s been resonating. And so I’m honored that we have Republicans and moderates that are volunteering on our campaign and donating to our campaign.”

The interview took place after Trump had criticized Nixon during his trip to Florida. When Hayes mentioned the president's comments, he pointed out that Trump had referred to her as a "very low IQ person" and a communist.

Hayes referred to the comments as part of a general pattern of attacks that Trump launches at his political opponents, at the same time noting that Nixon had drawn the president's attention as the Senate race became more important.

In response, Nixon stated that the Republicans had been paying attention since they had not anticipated a candidate who had fewer financial resources making headway in the race; she took the opportunity to argue that grassroots organizing and voter engagement were capable of competing with bigger campaign spending.
