DHS launches 'Operation Catch of the Day' targeting criminal immigrants in Maine
AUGUSTA, MAINE: The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has initiated a targeted immigration enforcement operation in Maine, signaling the latest escalation in the federal crackdown on criminal illegal immigrants. The effort, named 'Operation Catch of the Day,' aims to identify and arrest undocumented migrants with serious criminal records residing in the state.
The operation began on Wednesday, with DHS officials highlighting their focus on the most dangerous offenders. This move has immediately drawn criticism from Maine’s Democratic leadership, raising tensions between state and federal authorities and setting the stage for legal and political confrontations.

DHS launches Maine crackdown targeting ‘worst criminal illegal immigrants’
Assistant DHS Secretary Tricia McLaughlin the launch and criticized Maine Governor Janet Mills and other Democratic leaders for sanctuary-style policies that she says forced federal intervention.
“We have launched Operation Catch of the Day to target the worst criminal illegal aliens in the state,” McLaughlin said. “On the first day of operations, we arrested individuals convicted of aggravated assault, false imprisonment, and child abuse.”
McLaughlin framed the enforcement action as part of a broader federal policy shift under President Donald Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, stating that criminal illegal aliens will no longer be allowed to threaten American citizens. DHS has not specified how long ICE agents will remain in Maine or if personnel from other locations will be reassigned to assist.
Federal officials warn of arrests and charges amid expected Maine protests
The operation comes after US Attorney Andrew Benson signaled the possibility of federal enforcement earlier this week, urging Maine residents to keep protests peaceful. “Anyone who assaults or impedes a federal officer or unlawfully obstructs federal activity commits a federal crime and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent,” Benson said.

Janet Mills says Maine will defend civil rights amid ICE expansion
In response, Gov. Mills highlighted public fear and reiterated her commitment to civil rights. In a post on X, she wrote, “The Trump Administration has ramped up ICE's operations in Maine, leaving many fearful of what's to come. Together, we will continue to place the safety and civil rights of Maine people above all else.”

Together, we will continue to place the safety and civil rights of Maine people above all else, and remain vigilant in our defense of due process and the rule of law.
Mills previously warned federal authorities that provocations undermining civil rights would not be tolerated, emphasizing the importance of peaceful resistance and preparation for federal enforcement actions.

Lewiston mayor condemns ICE enforcement tactics as fear-driven
Local officials also condemned the federal operation. Lewiston Mayor Carl Sheline accused ICE of using fear-driven tactics that harm communities. “These masked men with no regard for the rule of law are causing long-term damage,” Sheline said. “Lewiston stands for the dignity of all residents and will continue caring for our neighbors.”
The operation marks a new chapter in federal-state tensions over immigration policy, with Maine now in the national spotlight amid enforcement efforts targeting criminal undocumented migrants.
