DHS stands firm on Renee Good shooting, defends ICE agent amid heated CNN clash
MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA: The Department of Homeland Security is refusing to back down after fierce criticism over the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Renee Good, a Minneapolis mother killed during an ICE operation earlier this month.
The agency’s position, reiterated during a tense CNN interview, has intensified a national debate over immigration enforcement, use of force, and the language federal officials employ to justify deadly encounters involving civilians.
The clash unfolded live on air between DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin and CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer, where McLaughlin forcefully defended the ICE agent involved and repeated the administration’s assertion that Good posed a lethal threat to officers.

DHS claims Renee Good used her vehicle as a weapon during ICE operation
During the interview, Blitzer sharply challenged DHS’s characterization of Good, calling it “outrageous” and emphasizing that she was a mother who had just dropped her child off at school.
“Calling that mother a domestic t********t is outrageous,” Blitzer said.
McLaughlin rejected that framing outright, insisting the department had clear evidence of criminal behavior. “She was stalking and harassing law enforcement, then used her car as a deadly weapon,” McLaughlin responded.
When Blitzer pushed back, suggesting Good was simply driving past the scene, McLaughlin interrupted. “Absolutely not true. I have the facts on the ground,” she said. “She was blocking our law enforcement. That’s a federal crime. Our officer was in front of her. She gunned the vehicle.”
McLaughlin went further, stating, “It was an act of domestic t*******m. In no way is that outrageous. She had been stalking and harassing law enforcement all morning.”
Renee Good shooting sparks outrage as federal and local accounts conflict
Video footage from the scene showed ICE agents surrounding Good’s SUV as it blocked part of a roadway. Agents appeared to shout commands and attempt to open the vehicle’s doors before gunshots rang out as the car moved forward slightly.
Family members and local officials have disputed the federal account, arguing Good posed no imminent threat and that the use of lethal force was unjustified. They have also criticized DHS for repeatedly labeling her actions as terrorism before the conclusion of any independent investigation.
Minneapolis city leaders have called for transparency and an outside review of the incident. Protests have since erupted across Minnesota, with demonstrators accusing ICE of excessive force and aggressive enforcement tactics. For many, the rhetoric used by DHS officials has been as inflammatory as the shooting itself.
Trump administration defends ICE agent, maintains self-defense claim
The Trump administration has consistently maintained that the ICE agent acted in self-defense, framing the shooting as a split-second decision made under perceived threat.
DHS officials have emphasized that obstructing federal officers and using a vehicle during a confrontation can constitute serious federal crimes.
McLaughlin argued that Good’s actions showed a broader pattern of interference earlier that morning. “This wasn’t an accident or confusion,” she said. “This was deliberate.”
The shooting remains under review, even as DHS continues to stand firmly by its account and the language it has used to defend the agent involved.
