MANHATTAN, NEW YORK: During a recent appearance on CNN's ‘The Source’ with Kaitlan Collins, Republican congresswoman Elise Stefanik, who is being considered as a possible running mate for Donald Trump in the 2024 elections, indicated that if she had been serving as vice president in 2020, she would not have certified the election results.

"I would not have done what Mike Pence did," Stefanik said.

What did Stefanik disclose in her interview?

Collins asked Stefanik if she had yet participated in any vetting processes with the former President’s camp.

Citing her current role as House Republican Conference Chair, the New York representative said, "I would be proud to serve in a future Trump administration, but we have a lot to do.”

Stefanik was asked how she would have handled the events of January 6th, 2021, had she been in Vice President Mike Pence's position.

On that fateful day, a violent mob breached the U.S. Capitol, interrupting the congressional certification of the 2020 presidential election results.

Despite the dangers he faced, Vice President Pence oversaw the certification of results and officially announced the final tally: 306 electoral votes for President Biden and 232 for former President Trump, per a report by ABC News.

It's worth noting that Pence had previously stated that former President Trump had endangered his life and the lives of his family members by disparaging him on social media while the riot was unfolding.

Stefanik said of Pence, "I don't think that was the right approach.”

Stefanik was one of 147 Republicans in Congress who voted to reject the election results, albeit unlike many other GOP legislators, she only rejected electors from Pennsylvania rather than Arizona.

However, Mike Pence had clarified previously that he did not have the authority as vice president to reject the election results unilaterally.

Host Collins pressed Rep Stefanik further, "So, you would have rejected the votes?"

The Republican representing New York’s 21st congressional district repeated baseless allegations in her response, claiming that there was "unconstitutional overreach in states like Pennsylvania" and that the 2020 presidential election was not "legal and secure."

Backlash following Stefanik’s absurd interview from Thursday night

Democratic Rep Dan Goldman of New York reacted to Stefanik’s explosive claims made during her CNN interview.

Goldman tweeted, "She's a sycophant willing to do or say anything for Trump's approval, including sacrificing our democracy.”

The New York congressman doubled down by appearing on CNN and stated that Stefanik’s comments "should scare the American people because that is anti-democratic, and that is going to lead us down a very, very dangerous road if there's a yes-person as vice president who will do whatever Donald Trump wants."

Rep. Dan Crenshaw of Texas also scrutinized Stefanik for being 'incorrect' in her assessment.

With CNN's Dana Bash, Crenshaw shared, "The Constitution gives you no power -- you being the vice president -- no power to decertify the election.”

In addition to Rep. Stefanik, other potential candidates for the vice-presidential position for a presumptive Trump second term have emerged, including Governor Kristi Noem of South Dakota and Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina.

Internet lambasted Stefanik for her out of hand remarks surrounding Mike Pence

People on X (formerly Twitter) were quick to slam the New York Republican with vice-presidential ambitions, cautioning her that the US democracy is much more crucial than getting validation from whoever's in charge.

One X user remarked: "Such a disgusting person. No wonder Republicans love her"

Another user said: "Her position is tantamount to treason. She's a liar and disgrace. Just like her Fuhrer."

Another user wrote: "She should never be in any administration."

One user quipped: "Cool. Cool. if Trump wins. Kamala doesn’t have to certify then."

Another X user remarked: "Imagine being so morally corrupt you go against the constitution to appeal for a potential job opportunity. Pick me vibes are so embarrassing"

Finally, this user tweeted: "Could it be because she’s an election denier, insurrectionist, worships at the feet of Trump, sold her soul for a chance to be Trump’s VP or is this who’s she’s been all along? Nothing like a MAGA Republican hiding out as a moderate until political aspirations get in the way."
