Internet divided as Secretary Pete Buttigieg shares update on Baltimore bridge salvage operation
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Pete Buttigieg took to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Easter Sunday, March 31, 2024, to talk about the salvage operation that is underway at the site of the Baltimore Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse.
The Transportation Secretary also remembered the lives lost in the tragedy of March 26 over the holiday, which was caused by the cargo ship Dali crashing into one of the bridge's support in the early morning.

"On this Easter Sunday, thinking of the families of the workers whose lives were lost and the crews that are now on scene at the Key Bridge. This salvage operation is highly complex and challenging but we will stand with the community as long as it takes," wrote Buttigieg in his post on X.
He also shared a clip from his interview on 'Good Morning America,' where he provides an update on the work undertaken at the collapse site.
"It's not just that you have to remove the wreckage," he says in the clip. "It's that you have to do it in a way that doesn't cause portions of the bridge that are there across the water to shift."
"They've been under a lot of compression and tension. They could behave almost like a spring if they are not expertly managed," he explains. "You also, of course, still have the ship there alongside the channel. Measures are being taken to stop the stern of the ship from swinging into the channel. It's an incredibly complex operation."
