Don Lemon urges Taylor Swift to endorse Harris, but Internet cautions her against 'picking sides'
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YOK: Former CNN anchor Don Lemon made an urgent demand to Taylor Swift to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 race.
Lemon, who was ousted from his CNN role in 2023, called on Swift to come forward through Daily Mail as he strolled the streets of New York's Greenwich Village on Friday, September 6.
"Taylor Swift needs to step forward. She's very influential. She can move an election," the journalist told the outlet.
With less than two months left for the presidential election face-off between Harris and former president Donald Trump, the pop sensation continues to remain silent amidst mounting speculations about her endorsement.
Don Lemon urges Taylor Swift to use her platform for 'good'
Don Lemon continued his demand to Taylor Swift, pointing out why she should endorse Kamala Harris soon.
"If she believes in women's reproductive rights and a women's right to choose - and in democracy, I would say that Taylor Swift needs to come through," he said. "It would be a wasted opportunity if she does not use her platform for good."
The 'Bad Blood' singer has a massive fan following on social media, accounting for around 500 million. However, she has remained neutral on the platforms, steering clear of the political developments surrounding the 2024 election.
Swift had previously spoken out against Trump and pledged to "vote [him] out" before the 2020 election, citing she was "completely blindsided" by his White House entry in 2016.
Taylor Swift endorsed President Joe Biden in 2020
The pop icon broke her silence and declared her political leanings during the 2018 midterm election by endorsing Phil Bredesen, the Democratic opponent of Trump-backed Senate candidate Marsha Blackburn. She also threw her support behind Democrat Jim Cooper for the House of Representatives.
Her 2018 post on Instagram read, "In the past, I've been reluctant to publicly voice my political opinions, but due to several events in my life and in the world in the past two years, I feel very differently about that now."
"I always have and always will cast my vote based on which candidate will protect and fight for the human rights I believe we all deserve in this country."

In 2020, she endorsed President Joe Biden, asserting her belief in the Biden-Harris ticket's ability to heal the country.
Though Swift remained silent without offering her support to former 2024 candidate Biden or his successor, Harris, her fans rallied behind the Democratic presidential nominee.
The '@Swifties4Kamala' page on X (formerly Twitter) garnered nearly 76,000 followers.
The Democratic National Convention in August also included stations where attendees could make friendship bracelets as a homage to the pop stars' concerts.
Internet disagrees with Don Lemon as he urges Taylor Swift to endorse Kamala Harris
Don Lemon's demand for Taylor Swift to get a Kamala Harris endorsement led netizens to point out in Daily Mail's comment section why it would backfire. Some noted that a voter should not decide his vote based on a singer's opinion, while others said Swift could alienate some of her fans if she did not remain neutral.
"That’s a great way to alienate half of her audience- and most of the rest of us - if she starts getting political. The last thing we need is another celebrity picking sides," a user commented.
"Anyone basing their vote on a Pop Star's opinion, should not be voting in the first place. I don't care who they are endorsing," another added.
"You want a smart voter. Not a young voter who doesn't do their own research and come to their own conclusion. Oh Taylor Swift says to jump off a bridge. Oh Don Le'Mon," one user said.
"What a way to pick a president to run a country by picking someone because a singer wants you to, not for the strongest person to protect the country," read a response.
"Guess what Don a lot of her fans are conservatives! Unless she wants her career to end up like yours she’ll keep her political views to herself!" someone else chimed in.
"Just because she can, doesn't mean she should. the best thing she could do is not say a thing as this country has both a secret ballot and privacy of thought," an individual opined.
"If your candidates future depends on a celebrity endorsement, then your candidate is terrible. Some self reflection should also be in order as well with your decisions," another user added.
"Man who can no longer influence anyone begs for someone a million times more popular to do what used to be his job," read one remark.
