BELLEAU, FRANCE: President Joe Biden concluded his five-day visit to France with a heartfelt ceremony at a World War I cemetery, paying tribute to the soldiers buried there—an act starkly contrasting former president Donald Trump’s controversial decision to skip the visit six years ago due to weather concerns.

On Sunday, June 9, President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden laid a wreath at the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery and Memorial, situated near the village of Belleau, approximately 60 miles northeast of Paris, the New York Post reported.

The cemetery is the final resting place for over 2,000 American soldiers who perished in World War I, many of whom fought staunchly in the Belleau Wood and Marne Valley battles during the summer of 1918.

Holding hands, the Bidens walked solemnly to the cemetery chapel, surrounded by rows of white, cross-shaped headstones. Biden stood in front of a floral wreath at the chapel steps, made the sign of the cross, and observed a moment of silence.

He later told reporters, "I couldn’t imagine coming to Normandy and not making the short trip to Aisne-Marne cemetery to honor the soldiers buried here."

Biden emphasized the significance of America's role in the war, stating, "America showed up to stop the Germans. America showed up to make sure that they did not prevail. America shows up when we're needed, just like our allies show up for us."

During his trip to France, Biden focused extensively on World War II veterans, commemorating the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy on June 6, 1944.

He praised the Allied troops who stormed Normandy’s beaches, describing their actions as having "literally saved the world." His visit to the Aisne-Marne cemetery served to honor not only the sacrifices of World War II veterans but also those who fought and died in World War I.

Biden's visit subtly underscored Trump's refusal to visit the same cemetery in 2018. Trump canceled his trip to Aisne-Marne, reportedly due to rain, which he claimed grounded his helicopter. However, a report by The Atlantic alleged that Trump dismissed the cemetery visit, calling the fallen soldiers "losers" and "suckers."

The White House under Trump denied these claims, citing logistical issues due to weather. Nevertheless, Biden has repeatedly referenced Trump’s controversial remarks during his campaign, highlighting the stark contrast in their respect for military service.

The users on the internet responded swiftly to the news of Joe Biden’s visit, with many mocking Donald Trump for his past actions and remarks about the military.

On Facebook, one user wrote, "Thinking that we had and may have again, a president that openly disrespects our military is mind-blowing. Especially when he once dodged a draft because he was a rich man’s little wuss boy. How embarrassing."

Another remarked, "We all remember Trump not going to one cemetery because it was raining and he didn’t want to get his toupee wet. That’s how little he cares about our soldiers that lost their lives fighting for our freedom."

One person commented, "It doesn’t take much to make convict Donny look bad, especially regarding Veterans," while another added, "When Donald was there, it DEFINITELY was filled with a loser."

Criticism of Trump’s military stance was rampant, with one individual commenting, "Neither Trump nor any of his family in history ever served in the US Military. Trump is an armchair pseudo-patriot," while another remarked, "Of course Trump hates the American military, it represents a roadblock between him and the fascist dictatorship he wants."

One person wrote, "That has to be one of the most disgusting things Trump has ever said. No military person and his or her family should ever want Trump to be our President again."

Another bluntly stated, "Trump's a POS, always has been."
