NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Eddie Redmayne faced backlash on social media following his "terrifying" 'Cabaret' performance at the 2024 Tony Awards on Sunday, June 16, with several likening him to the creepy clown Pennywise.

The 'Les Miserables' actor has not attended the awards ceremony since 2010, the year he took home the Best Featured Actor award in a play for 'Red'.

Eddie Redmayne performed as Emcee at Tony 2024 welcome 'Cabaret' performance

The 42-year-old British actor—who won the Best Actor Oscar in 2015 for his role in 'The Theory of Everything'—performed the Emcee during a spooky rendition of 'Willkommen' to the awards.

However, people criticized the actor for his incredibly odd performance, calling him a "sleep paralysis demon" and suggesting that his Oscar should be revoked.

Eddie was seen belting out show tunes with a stooped back, making strange movements, and staring wide-eyed at the camera in extreme close-ups, per Daily Mail.

Eddie was joined by his co-star Gayle Rankin and other performers from the show to give the viewers a taste of the chaotic entertainment.

The actor is now reprising his critically acclaimed role as Emcee in 'Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club', a role he played in 2021 in London's West End. Rebecca Frecknall is the director of the production.

The 'Theory of Everything' actor won an Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical for his role as Emcee in the critically acclaimed West End production of the 1930s Kander and Ebb musical, which he performed alongside Jesse Buckley.

Eddie will play Emcee for a brief run till August 31 in the Broadway revival, which invites patrons to partake in pre-show entertainment, cocktails, and meals prior to the show commencing.
