Elon Musk's exit rumors intensify as report claims Trump informed 'inner circle' about the step back

WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump has reportedly informed his "inner circle" and members of his Cabinet that Elon Musk will soon be stepping back from his role as a key adviser in the administration.
This development follows weeks of speculation about Musk’s future in the administration, particularly after a Trump-endorsed judicial candidate faced defeat in Wisconsin.
Trump insiders say Elon Musk's exit was mutually decided
Three Trump insiders, who were granted anonymity to describe the evolving relationship, told Politico that the president remains satisfied with Musk’s efforts, but both have agreed it will soon be time for him to step away.

"The president remains pleased with Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency initiative, but both men have decided in recent days that it will soon be time for Musk to return to his businesses and take on a supporting role," the sources told the outlet.
This comes after a month when an outside political adviser close to the president, also speaking anonymously, told the outlet that Musk was "here to stay."
"There are likely people who are counting the days until 130 days are up and will push against keeping him around, but I just think that’s a losing battle," said the adviser.

Elon Musk’s involvement in Wisconsin race draws scrutiny
Elon Musk had allegedlly heavily funded and promoted the Wisconsin campaign, according to Newsweek.
However, some political analysts and GOP strategists blamed his polarizing public image as one of the factors contributing to the loss.

At the same time, Musk is also facing pressure from Tesla shareholders.
The company’s sales dropped 13 percent in the first quarter of 2025—its worst performance in nearly three years—as public backlash over his political involvement grew.
Despite these challenges, a senior administration official told the publication that Musk is likely to retain an informal advisory role and may still be seen occasionally at the White House.
Another official, however, warned against assuming Musk’s complete departure from Trump’s circle, saying, "Anyone who thinks Musk is going to disappear entirely from Trump’s orbit is fooling themselves."
Karoline Leavitt dismisses Elon Musk departure report as 'garbage'
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt refuted the claims about Musk’s exit, calling them baseless.
"This 'scoop' is garbage. Elon Musk and President Trump have both publicly stated that Elon will depart from public service as a special government employee when his incredible work at DOGE is complete," Leavitt posted on X.
This “scoop” is garbage.

Elon Musk and President Trump have both *publicly* stated that Elon will depart from public service as a special government employee when his incredible work at DOGE is complete. https://t.co/Brppff6SKi
Reactions online varied, with some users questioning the significance of the report.
"Remember the opposite of what she says always is true. lol," one person commented in reaction to Leavitt’s post.
Another user wrote, "He shouldn't even have a role. Ridiculous."

Others argued that Musk’s departure was already public knowledge. "If I am not mistaken, Elon being active only 130 days is what was planned from the start, so how is this a 'scoop'?"
Another person asked. "It was not a long-term position..WE ALREADY KNEW THIS..," wrote someone else.
