WASHINGTON, DC: Erika Kirk, the widow of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, said that her decision to attend the White House Correspondents’ Dinner wasn’t about optics. It was personal.

Speaking on Wednesday, April 29, Kirk said she walked into the room with a clear purpose: to face journalists she believes have misrepresented her and her late husband.

“Everyone is asking why I even went,” she said. “It was because many of the journalists in that room have attempted to dehumanize me, and I wanted to meet some of them face to face.”

Erika Kirk described a direct interaction with a reporter during the evening, using it to highlight her frustration with media coverage. “Why have a conversation about me when you can have a conversation with me?” she said.

Recounting the exchange, she said a journalist approached her with sympathy, telling her she looked “beautiful” and expressing condolences.

Kirk responded sharply, saying, “It is so nice to put a name to the face, especially with all the slander, the lies, and accusations that are out there surrounding my husband’s death and myself.”

She also reflected on what she saw as the contrast between the evening’s outward civility and the media environment that followed.

“This is my first time at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner,” she said. “I find it so fascinating, everyone is all dressed up, co-mingling in and out of each other’s cocktail parties.”

“And then by Monday morning,” she continued, “things will go back to being an absolute bloodbath between all of you.”

According to Kirk, the journalist she spoke to acknowledged the observation, replying, “I know, isn’t tonight so special?”

Erika also opened up on illegal immigration, saying, “While we may have big problems with illegal immigration in this country. I have to tell you, we have an even bigger problem when it comes to the systemic indoctrination and radicalization of our own citizens.”

Night cut short by chaos

Kirk’s appearance at the event ended abruptly when gunfire broke out at the venue, triggering panic inside the ballroom.

Witnesses said attendees ducked under tables as security rushed to secure the area and evacuate high-profile guests, including Donald Trump.

Kirk, who has remained in the public eye since the killing of her husband Charlie Kirk in 2025, was seen visibly shaken as she was escorted out.

“I just want to go home,” she reportedly said during the evacuation.
