NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: The long-standing tensions surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict erupted into a dramatic confrontation at Columbia University. What started as a peaceful anti-Israel protest escalated into a clash between students and law enforcement.

Among the arrested protesters was Isra Hirsi, 21, daughter of Congresswoman Ilhan Omar. Over 100 demonstrators were arrested by the NYPD as the protest evolved into an unauthorized encampment on the university's Morningside Campus, as per New York Post.

According to NYPD executive officer Captain Jaclyn Keane, Hirsi, a junior at Barnard College, was apprehended and summoned for trespassing. Footage captured by The New York Post showed Hirsi being handcuffed by officers wearing riot gear before being led into an NYC Corrections bus.

The protest, organized by the student group Columbia University Apartheid Divest, of which Hirsi is an organizer, had escalated dramatically following the setup of numerous tents on campus, similar to those during the Occupy Wall Street movement's protests in Zuccotti Park back in 2011.

However, unlike the previous occupation, Columbia's administration swiftly intervened, calling in the NYPD to dismantle the encampment. Mayor Eric Adams condemned the disruption caused by the protest, telling media outlets that "students have a right to free speech. They do not have a right to violate university policies and disrupt learning on campus."

Isra Hirsi has been involved in political activism from a young age

Hirsi's involvement in the protests had already drawn consequences from her college. Earlier in the day, she revealed on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that she was one of three students suspended by Barnard College for "standing in solidarity with Palestinians facing a genocide."

"I just received notice that I am 1 of 3 students suspended for standing in solidarity with Palestinians facing a genocide. I’m an organizer with CU Apartheid Divest @ColumbiaSJP, in my 3 years at @BarnardCollege I have never been reprimanded or received any disciplinary warnings," she lamented in her social media post.

As the daughter of Omar, a member of the progressive 'Squad' in Congress and a frequent target of criticism for her statements on Israel, Hirsi has been involved in political activism from a young age.

According to Vice, she attended her first protest at the age of 6, and at 12, she joined her family at a Black Lives Matter protest that led to the Mall of America's shutdown, as per The New York Times.

Hirsi's arrest, however, drew stern criticism on social media. One X user said, "The enemy from within." Another remarked, "I guess apples really don't fall very far from trees do they."

A third user expressed, "Suspended? Expel her now." Another person commented, "Very good. This Pro-Hamas lady should be in jail." "Poor Jew hater!" wrote a fifth user. "I hope she has to spend the night," stated someone else.

"These people use western freedom to pedal hatred’ that’s not what we need’ go home ‘ to Somalia," a user remarked. "Kick her anti-Semitic arse out of school and prosecute her," demanded another.
