The same post blamed the Trump administration for the Reflecting Pool's condition, arguing that officials had previously blamed algae growth on vandalism instead of problems with the renovation. The user claimed the return of the green water raised new questions about those earlier explanations.
At the same time, several X users shared videos they said showed cleanup crews working around the Reflecting Pool after the fireworks display.
One post, which received more than 1 million views, was captioned, "Firework cleanup at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool this afternoon."
The video showed piles of dark debris along the edges of the pool, green-colored water with floating material, and workers using forklifts and dumpsters to clean the area.
The Washington Monument could also be seen in the background, highlighting the scale of the cleanup after the Independence Day celebration.
Fact Check: True
The claim is true. The viral photos accurately show the condition of the area around the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool after the July 4 celebrations.
Several of the widely shared images originated from photos and videos taken by freelance photojournalist Amanda Moore and photographer Laura Thompson, who posted them on Instagram under the handle @wawawomp.
Thompson provided the original image files to verify their authenticity. The files retained the .NEF format, indicating they were captured on a Nikon camera. She also shared metadata showing the photos' date, time, and other details.
Although metadata can be altered, the images were supported by multiple videos recorded by other people from different angles.
Those videos also showed cleanup crews in bright yellow uniforms working around the Reflecting Pool, reinforcing that the photos accurately captured the aftermath of the event.
Thompson is an established photojournalist whose work has appeared in major publications, including The New York Times.
The consistency between her original files, supporting videos, and independent reporting provides strong evidence that the viral photos genuinely depict the Reflecting Pool following the July 4 fireworks celebration.
