Fact Check: Did Bill Gates announce $333M bid to purchase X from Elon Musk?

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk acquired Twitter for $44 billion in October 2022 and renamed the social networking platform X in July 2023. Since then, the multi-billionaire has been using X as his primary networking platform.

Interestingly, social media posts claiming that Microsoft co-founder and billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates announced a $333 million bid to buy X from Musk have recently been making the rounds of the internet. But is there any truth to this? Let us find out below.

Claim: Bill Gates announced a $333 million bid to purchase X from Elon Musk

A Facebook user named Erik Yates posted on March 4, "Bill Gates Makes Bold Move Against Elon Musk, Announcing $333 Million Bid for X...."

The post has so far received more than 38,000 reactions, 24,300 comments, and 2,400 shares. It consisted of two pictures, one showing Gates and the other being Musk.

The same user left a reply under the post and added a link to more information on an external website.

Meanwhile, several others shared similar posts on social media platforms such as Bluesky, Threads, and X.

Fact Check: No proper evidence to back the claim of Bill Gates' $333 million bid

The claim appears to be false as there is no evidence of Bill Gates announcing the intent to bid $333 million to buy X from Elon Musk, according to the fact-checking website Snopes.

Moreover, searches on search engines such as Google and others showed no news regarding Gates showing any interest in buying X.

Furthermore, Gates' own X account displayed no recent posts about any such announcement, per the fact-checking outlet.

Interestingly, a similar claim about Amazon founder Jeff Bezos purportedly announcing an intention to bid $333 million for X went viral across social media in February 2025. The rumor was promptly debunked by USA Today.

News link shared in the viral post led to an inauthentic website

Erik Yates' Facebook post and the profile's page transparency tab displayed many page managers located in Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines, according to Snopes. No information proved that the user's name truly belonged to someone managing the page. 

Additionally, the link shared in the comment under the post took users to an article on the disreputable news site videoviral2.greensmartmobility.com.

The story had a headline that read, "Bill Gates Strikes Back at Elon Musk, Announces $333 Million Offer to Buy X—Musk's Immediate Reaction Shakes the Internet!"

However, the text of the article had nothing regarding Gates announcing a $333 million offer for X. The article displayed a copy of an unrelated story about Gates and Musk.
