MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA: A video circulating online claims that Chicago Police Chief Larry Snelling publicly supported the ICE agent, Jonathan Ross, who fatally shot Renee Nicole Good during an immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis.

The post has led to confusion about what Snelling actually said and meant. This article fact-checks those claims.

A video of Chicago Police Police Chief Larry Snelling warning protesters in Chicago not to "box in" or "follow" federal immigration enforcement officers is being shared online with claims that he was expressing support for the ICE agent involved in the Minneapolis shooting.

In the video, Snelling warned protestors against physically obstructing federal enforcement vehicles. He said, “Let me make this clear! Federal agents, ICE, and HSI, are officers. They are agents of law enforcement. If you box them in...plow a vehicle, you're using deadly force. And they can use deadly force in response to stop you!"

"We need to be clear about these laws. We cannot become a society where we just decide to take everything in our own hands and start to commit crimes against law enforcement!" he said.

"It is a crime. You may not like what they're doing. I can understand that there's a lot of emotions out there, but that does not mean that you get to commit a crime, especially one that could lead to deadly force," Snelling cautioned. "We need to keep everyone safe. Our responsibilities when it comes to federal agents, and I've been asked these questions, we do not interfere with the duties and responsibilities of federal agents."

Fact Check: Larry Snelling's statement is unrelated to the incident

Larry Snelling made these remarks during a press briefing on October 6, 2025. The comments were covered by Fox News, ABC 7 Chicago, and other outlets at the time. They have since resurfaced on X following the ICE shooting in Minneapolis on January 7, 2026.

Snelling did not express support for the ICE agent who fatally shot Good.

The viral claim stems from Snelling's earlier remark about public safety and the legal consequences of obstructing federal law enforcement. The statements are unrelated to the Minneapolis shooting. His comments are now being mischaracterized as an endorsement of the incident.

Jonathan Ross identified as the ICE agent who shot Renee Nicole Good

Multiple credible news outlets have confirmed that Ross is the ICE agent who fatally shot Good.

Authorities say Ross fired three shots on January 7, killing Good, 37, after she allegedly drove her vehicle toward him during a street confrontation in Minneapolis.

Additionally, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and other officials confirmed that Ross was involved in a violent incident in Bloomington, Minnesota, in June 2025.
