Fact Check: Did Kash Patel say he has evidence to raid Tom Hanks' Greek island?
WASHINGTON, DC: A claim has been going viral on social media platforms that FBI Director Kash Patel said that he has enough evidence to ask the Greek government to raid the island compound of Hollywood actor Tom Hanks, as he is wanted for serious crimes. The claim has sparked confusion and speculation among many. Let us fact-check it.
Claim: Tom Hanks is wanted by FBI for questioning for several allegations
According to the viral claim, “Kash Patel says the FBI has enough evidence to ask the Greek government for permission to raid Tom Hanks' island compound.”
"They can't extradite him, but they can give us permission to go in."
The post even claims that Hanks is wanted for questioning for several allegations, some of which are very serious, but it did not specify the charges against the actor, who now lives in Greece.
“The Greek Government is expected to comply,” the post noted.
The claim that surfaced on Facebook has been shared on X, garnering hundreds of thousands of views, with netizens confused about the rumor.
Fact Check: False, the claim originated as a satire
However, the claim is false and was first posted by a parody account, which often posts such claims for the sake of engagement. The post even has an overlay text which states, ‘Nothing on this page is real.’
There is no evidence of an FBI probe against the 69-year-old actor and that he is wanted for serious crimes, nor are there any report about the Greek government permitting a raid on the actor's island compound.
The claim likely stemmed from the actor’s name being mentioned in the new tranche of files related to Jeffrey Epstein.
Similar claims linking Tom Hanks to Jeffrey Epstein
A similar rumor surfaced about Hanks last month, that the actor, who is a Greek citizen, was denied entry to the Port of Athens, Greece, over his purported mention in the Jeffrey Epstein files. The rumor was later debunked.
Although there are references to Tom Hanks in Jeffrey Epstein's emails in the newly released files related to the FBI's probe into Epstein, they are only mentioned in Epstein's conversations with his associates, and there is no recorded contact between Epstein and Tom Hanks in the files.
In 2020, a similar rumour emerged that Hanks flew on Jeffrey Epstein's private jet to Little St. James Island, popularly called 'Epstein Island,' but fact checks proved that the flight logs of Jeffrey Epstein do not mention Tom Hanks, and the claims were false.
