NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Democrat Zohran Mamdani’s NYC election victory in November has become one of the hottest topics in the country. His win drew mixed reactions; some celebrated, while others criticized. The young politician emerged victorious in the mayoral race, defeating Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa.

Recently, a viral claim surfaced online suggesting that, following Mamdani’s election, a record-breaking 640,006 residential properties were listed in just 72 hours.

This claim first appeared on a Facebook account, and social media has been buzzing with reactions ever since. Before jumping to conclusions, it’s worth taking a closer look to see whether there’s any truth behind the story.

Weeks after Mamdani won the Democratic primary for mayor, various wealthy interest groups have begun to mobilize against the 33-year-old state assemblyman. Mamdani has vowed to freeze rent hikes for a year, make buses free, and increase taxes on wealthy New Yorkers. Former Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Monday that he will continue his run for New York City mayor after losing to Zohran Mamdani in last month's Democratic primary. (Photo by Spencer Platt/Getty Images)

Claim: NYC broke real estate listing record after Zohran Mamdani’s win

The news began with speculation and was quickly fueled by social media. Even before Zohran Mamdani was officially elected, rumors circulated that businesses and residents might leave the city if he won.

These claims gained traction online, and on Saturday, November 15, a Facebook user named Lanelle Phillips posted, "It's official: New York City has broken the world record for residential real estate listings in 72 hours."

The post continued, quoting real estate magnate Joe Barron: "640,006 listings. The next closest was New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina at 109,009." Phillips added, "They didn't just break the record; they shattered it. This is what you voted for, New York!" The post included an image of residential buildings.

The claim traces back to a Facebook page, ALLOD (America’s Last Line of Defense), which shared a real estate story on Thursday, November 13. The post included images of residential buildings with the caption, "He's bad for the Big Apple. That's pretty obvious," targeting Mamdani and NYC’s real estate market.

Fact Check: False, no evidence to back the viral claim

Let’s set the record straight: the viral claim is not true. A quick Google search shows no updates supporting the story, and queries such as “640,006 listings New York City,” “640,000 private home listings New York City,” and “109,009 listings New Orleans” return no valid results.

Reputable publications including The New York Post, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Mediaite, People, and Fox News have not reported anything of this nature before or after Mamdani’s November win.

The image shared in the viral post had a watermark reading “ALLOD Satire” and clearly stated, “NOTHING on this page is REAL.”

For those unaware, ALLOD is a network known for satirical social media posts and fabricated news, and their disclaimer clarifies that all their content is fictional. The post also mentioned Joe Barron, but he is a fictional character with no connection to New York City real estate, according to Snopes, and is part of ALLOD’s satire.

Additionally, Snopes reported that the actual number of listings at the time was nowhere near the claim, with 22,467 listings on Zillow, 28,551 on Realtor.com, and 229 on For Sale By Owner.
