Fact Check: Did Pope Leo challenge Trump to a public cognitive test?
WASHINGTON, DC: After President Donald Trump called for mandatory cognitive screenings for all presidential and vice-presidential candidates, a rumor began circulating on social media platforms claiming that Pope Leo XIV is ready to challenge the president to take a cognitive test in public, sparking speculation.
Let us analyse and fact-check the claim.
Claim: Pope Leo challenges Trump to cognitive test
According to the viral claim, the Pope is reportedly willing to challenge Trump to a publicly administered cognitive test.
The alleged development came after the POTUS emphasized that such evaluations are vital to prevent the American public from accidentally electing someone who lacks the mental sharpness required to lead the nation, during an address on Friday, May 1.
The claim has spread across multiple social media platforms, including X, Facebook, and Threads, garnering hundreds of thousands of views.
Many in the comments appear to believe the claim to be authentic, triggering criticism and mockery.
Fact Check: The claim originated as a satire
However, the rumor is false, as there is no credible evidence to support the claim.
A Google search for the rumor yielded no credible reports from any prominent news media outlets or any official statement from the Pope or the Catholic Church about the test.
The search also revealed that the claim was first posted by an X account called ‘The Halfway Post,’ a parody account that describes itself as satire. Hence, the post was intended as satire for engagement.
A fact check by Grok also confirmed this, stating, “It's satire from Halfway Post, a comedy account that openly makes up exaggerated ‘news.’"
"There are no credible reports of Pope Leo XIV challenging President Trump to a cognitive test, it's a joke riffing on their recent public feud and Trump's history of boasting about such tests.”
Trump demands cognitive tests, warns of unfit leaders
While speaking to residents of The Villages in Florida, Trump laid out the justification for his proposal.
He warned that without formal testing, a candidate might use a "good line of cr*p" to win an election, but might actually lack the mental sharpness to lead the nation.
“I mean, you get a guy who gets in there, he’s got a good line of cr*p. He gets in, and all of a sudden, you’re stuck with a man who’s a moron,” Trump told the crowd. “This is not good.”
Trump spent a portion of his speech detailing his own history with these examinations, which are typically administered to detect signs of dementia or cognitive decline.
