LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Claims have surfaced online suggesting that Mary Anne MacLeod Trump, the mother of US President-elect Donald Trump, made a harsh remark about her son's political career, reportedly calling him "an idiot."

This explosive statement has gone viral, with numerous social media users sharing the alleged quote as Trump continues to dominate headlines following his presidential victory over Kamala Harris.

The comment has sparked a frenzy online, fueling widespread discussion during the aftermath of the election campaign, as it was claimed by Trump’s mother who died in 2000.

What did Trump's mother say?

A December 2019 post on X by user @TaraLOGrady claimed to quote Donald Trump’s mother, Mary Anne MacLeod Trump, saying, "Yes, he's an idiot with zero common sense and no social skills, but he is my son. I just hope he never goes into politics, he'd be a disaster."

The post included a photo of Trump standing with his mother, with the quote displayed on the right side of the image.

The same quote quickly spread across other platforms, including Reddit, Facebook, and X. One such post by @robertcooper58 gained significant attention, accompanied by the caption, "Mother knows best! #TrumpIsALaughingStock."

The post, featuring the image with the controversial quote, quickly amassed over 1.3 million views and was reshared by 13,000 users, reflecting the widespread belief in the rumor.

Another account, @RobertCStern, also shared the quote in October 2024 during Donald Trump's campaign, where it quickly gained traction and accumulated over 2 million views.

Since the claim about Trump’s mother, Mary Anne MacLeod, went viral online, it’s important to examine the quote's authenticity. While digital archives of newspapers, books, and magazines continue to grow, providing new evidence for historical claims, research into the 2019 quote revealed no proof that she ever made such a statement.

According to Snopes, their investigation found no evidence supporting the claim. Fact-checking outlets like PolitiFact and Reuters also reviewed the quote and found no verification.

A similar investigation conducted in 2024, amid Trump's campaign for the 2024 US presidential election, uncovered no compelling evidence to back the quote's authenticity.

Since the quote surfaced nearly two decades after Mary Anne MacLeod Trump's death in August 2000, the lack of evidence from her lifetime raises a red flag, as such discrepancies are common in fake or misattributed quotes.

The authenticity research above revealed a lack of sufficient evidence to confirm whether the claim is true or false.
