Fact Check: Does the photo show White House turned into a messy construction site?
WASHINGTON, DC: Amid President Donald Trump’s ongoing renovation projects at the White House, a photo began circulating on social media platforms claiming to show the monument being turned into a messy construction site. The photo has sparked criticism and concerns about the state of the building. Let us analyze the viral photo and fact-check it.
Claim: White House turned into a messy construction site
The viral photo has been circulating online since last month, purportedly showing the White House in a state of near-demolition.
The photo has sparked debates, with many lamenting the state of the historic presidential residence.
The photo has been shared on Facebook and X, garnering millions of views, with one X post that shared the photo stating, “Nobody is stopping [U.S. President Donald] Trump from destroying it."
While many expressed concerns about the condition of the historic monument, a few appeared to dismiss it as fake, prompting a fact check.
Fact Check: The photo is miscaptioned
However, the captions in the posts are misleading. While the viral photo is authentic and does show part of the White House grounds, it had been cropped to omit the presidential residence - the part of the structure most generally considered to be the White House, which remains intact.
The messy construction site in the photo only shows construction of the ballroom Trump commissioned to replace the East Wing, which was demolished in October 2025.
A wider image of the monument taken recently shows that the original building is intact as construction continued to the east.
Since the photo authentically shows the grounds of the White House, but not the presidential residence, the claim has been rated miscaptioned.
Donald Trump touts the ballroom as privately funded 'gift'
“All of this paid for by myself,” Trump told reporters while touring the site in May. He repeatedly referred to the ballroom as a “gift” and asserted that taxpayer money was not being used for the construction itself.
The president also spoke in detail about the design and functionality of the structure, portraying it as both an aesthetic and strategic improvement to the White House grounds.
According to Trump, the ballroom would enhance security around the White House complex beyond its ceremonial role. “It is necessary for the ballroom to be built with what you see over here,” Trump said. “The ballroom becomes a shield for everything that you see here.”
“It’s the one opportunity for the military to do something,” he said, without elaborating further.
