Fact Check: Is Bad Bunny launching a school for Americans to learn Spanish?
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: A claim has been going viral on social media platforms that rapper Bad Bunny will launch a school for Americans to learn Spanish, sparking criticism and speculation from netizens who questioned its authenticity. Let us analyze the origins of the rumor and fact-check the viral claim about the rapper.
Claim: Bad Bunny is opening a Spanish school for Americans
The claim surfaced on Wednesday, March 18, on X, which came with a photo of the Puerto Rican rapper, followed by a caption stating, “Bad Bunny is reportedly launching a school for Americans to learn Spanish.”
The post even claims that the rapper said, “We taking over,” suggesting that English will be replaced by Spanish, challenging President Donald Trump’s anti-immigration polices.
The post has garnered almost a hundred thousand views and thousands of likes as of this writing. The comments section even appears to believe the claim to be true, while many seemed outraged.
Fact Check: Fake, claim originated as a satire
The claim, however, is false and originated from a popular parody account called Hoops Crave, which describes itself in its bio as a 'parody account.'
The page has posted similar fake and unverified claims for the sake of engagement.
A search on Google for the claim yielded no results, which, if true, would have been widely covered by prominent news media outlets, as the rapper is popular for his criticisms against immigration crackdowns in the country.
A fact check by Grok stated, “Not real—HoopsCrave is a parody account memeing Bad Bunny's SNL joke, telling fans they had ‘4 months to learn Spanish' for his all-Spanish Super Bowl halftime show."
"That actually sparked a 35%+ surge in Spanish lessons on Duolingo. No school exists. Private language schools are legal for anyone in the US; gov has zero role in approving them.”
Bad Bunny tells fans no Spanish needed
Last month, before the highly anticipated and debated Super Bowl halftime performance, the Puerto Rican rapper, whose original name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, addressed people’s concerns about understanding his mother tongue, as he’s a Spanish speaker.
“It’s going to be easy; people only have to worry about dancing. They don’t even have to learn Spanish. Better they learn to dance. There is no better dance than the one that comes from the heart,” Bad Bunny said.
Also during the presser, the Grammy winner hinted at some surprise at the halftime show. “I just want to have fun, it’s going to be a huge party … I don’t want to give spoilers,” he claimed.
He also added that “of course I will have a lot of guests: my family and friends or all the Latino community around the world.”
