Fact Check: Is photo of barbed wire fencing, guard towers around Reflecting Pool real?
WASHINGTON, DC: Amid the allegations and debates surrounding the damage to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, a photo began circulating on social media platforms claiming to show the renovated pool protected by barbed wire fencing and guard towers around it, sparking speculations. Let us analyse the photo and fact-check its authenticity.
Claim: Photo shows barbed wire fencing and guard towers around the reflecting pool
The viral photo shows the iconic pool filled with green water and bordered by guard towers and barbed wire fencing.
The image went viral after it was reopened following the renovation by the administration of President Donald Trump, after which it turned green with algae, which Trump blamed on vandals.
The image was shared on Facebook, X, and Reddit, garnering millions of views. While many under the comments appeared to believe the image to be real, a few others questioned its authenticity, calling for a fact check.
Fact Check: The image is AI-generated
The photo, however, is fake and is digitally altered. Authentic photos of the pool seen in major news media outlets and photo archives such as Getty Images, AP Photo, and Reuters show no barbed wire fencing or watch towers protecting the monument.
Additionally, the image has every sign of being generated using Artificial Intelligence. Hence, the photo is rated as fake.
The most definitive sign is the "Restricted Area" signs on the fence, which feature inconsistent text and often gibberish, a telltale sign of content generated with artificial intelligence.
Another sign is the size of the pool, which is far smaller than its real-life counterpart.
Donald Trump defends pool renovation amid backlash
Trump defended the renovation of the iconic pool, which reportedly cost more than $14 million and quickly became a source of controversy after the water turned green from algae blooms.
The project also faced criticism after the blue paint covering the basin began chipping away just days after completion. Despite the backlash, Trump claimed that the landmark was already improving.
"It's been gruesomely vandalized by thugs, bad people, but soon will be looking as beautiful as it looked just two weeks ago. In fact, I looked at it just a little while ago; it looks perfect already, but we're fixing it," he said.
"The vandals got to it; they've largely been caught and are being prosecuted. We can't let that happen to our country, can't let that happen, but it looks beautiful under the Trump administration," he insisted.
