WASHINGTON, DC: An X post claimed that the United States plans to shut down its consulates in Canada, Japan, and Indonesia. The claim quickly spread across social media, with many users interpreting it as a major shift in US diplomatic relations with the three countries. Let's fact-check the claim.

Claim: US to shut down consulates in Canada, Japan and Indonesia

The rumor appears to have originated from an X post that stated, "United States to shut down consulates in Canada, Japan and Indonesia."

The claim quickly gained attention online, with many users interpreting it as a major shift in US diplomatic policy and questioning what it could mean for America's presence overseas.

The post referenced a Reuters report about proposed changes to the US diplomatic network, prompting speculation about the scope of the reported plans and the reasons behind them.

The claim also fueled broader debate on social media, with users linking the reported move to US foreign policy priorities and America's global influence.

Others questioned whether the reported changes signaled a wider shift in diplomatic strategy.

A user claimed, "The US is isolating itself slowly; things are going downhill for the US." Another commented, "When the US starts pulling back diplomatic footprint even in Canada and Japan, you know the global political climate is shifting fast."

Fact Check: The claim is misleading

The claim is misleading. The reported closures involve only specific US consulates in Winnipeg, Canada; Nagoya, Japan; and Medan, Indonesia. They do not affect all US consulates or embassies in those countries.

A Reuters exclusive published on August 3, 2026, reported that the US State Department had notified Congress of plans to close five diplomatic missions: the consulates in Winnipeg, Nagoya, and Medan, and the embassy in St George's, Grenada, and an embassy branch office in Douala, Cameroon.

These are smaller regional posts, while the main US embassies and other consulates in Canada, Japan, and Indonesia will continue operating, with services expected to shift to other locations.

The State Department has not publicly confirmed the specific list of proposed closures. Instead, it said it is working to maintain an "efficient and effective" diplomatic footprint while following the required congressional notification process.

The Trump administration has presented the proposed closures as part of a broader effort to reduce costs and streamline diplomatic operations under its "America First" agenda. Officials have not linked the move to any dispute or diplomatic crisis involving Canada, Japan, Indonesia, Grenada, or Cameroon.

Reuters also noted that reports of broader plans to reduce the US diplomatic footprint have circulated since 2025, making this one of the few instances in which multiple overseas missions could close simultaneously without a geopolitical trigger.
