Fact Check: Is video showing US soldiers distraught after Iranian attack real?
WASHINGTON, DC: As the conflict in the Middle East intensifies following the death of Ayatollah Khamenei and the new supreme leader being severely injured, a video has been making rounds on social media platforms showing teary-eyed American soldiers after an attack from Iran. Let us analyze the viral video and fact-check its authenticity.
Claim: Viral clip shows distraught American soldiers
The video circulating on social media purportedly shows a distraught US soldier in the remains of a building destroyed by an Iranian attack.
The video appears to show a sobbing US soldier saying: "My [phone] screen is shattered, I can't even see my daughter's face anymore."
The clip, which was shared on multiple social media platforms such as Facebook, X, and Instagram, has garnered hundreds of thousands of views and is shared as an authentic video, following Iran’s retaliatory strikes against the US bases in the Middle East.
Fact Check: Fake, video is generated using AI
The video, however, is not authentic and was generated using AI, as indicated by the errors and inconsistencies. The size of the soldier's phone in the clip is disproportionate; his movements and the flow of his tears are also unnatural.
The American flag patches on the soldier's sleeves appear to contradict military guidance, where the patch on his left sleeve shows the stars of the flag extending across the entire flag, rather than just in the upper-left quadrant.
With the help of an AI detection tool, the audio in the clip was also found to be AI-generated.
Since the beginning of Iran’s retaliatory strikes between February 28 and March 11, four US embassies or consulates in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Iraq were targeted, including 13 different military sites housing American personnel.
As of March 13, there are no reports of US embassies or facilities housing US military personnel being damaged to the extent shown in the circulating video.
Donald Trump warns Iran of more strikes
President Donald Trump warned Iran of further military action on Friday, March 13, claiming the United States was 'destroying' the country’s leadership and military capabilities as tensions between the two nations intensified.
In a social media post, Trump said Iran was being defeated 'militarily, economically, and otherwise,' while accusing sections of the media of misrepresenting the situation.
The US president also vowed additional strikes against what he called the 'te**orist regime of Iran,' saying American forces possessed overwhelming military strength.
