Fact Check: Is viral list containing 11 names of US Marines killed during Iran War true?
WASHINGTON, DC: As the United States-Israel conflict with Iran continues to escalate and tensions in the Middle East, a list has been going viral on social media platforms, claiming to accurately show the names of the Marines who were killed within a week of this month since the start of the war. Let us analyze the list and fact-check its authenticity.
Claim: Online list shows names of US Marines killed in the Middle East
The viral claim that surfaced this month was shared with the claim that it showed the names of 11 US Marines who reportedly 'gave their lives this week.'
A Facebook post that shared the list stated, “R.I.P. Justin Allen 23, Brett Linley 29, Matthew Weikert 29, Justus Bartett 27, Dave Santos 21, Jesse Reed 26, Matthew Johnson 21, Zachary Fisher 24, Brandon King 23, Christopher Goeke 23, and Sheldon Tate 27.... All are Marines who gave their lives this week for us ....for our freedom!"
"There's no media for them at all... not even a mention of their names. Please honor them by copying and pasting this post. R.I.P. It is the least we can do.”
Fact Check: Fake, no US Marines died during the ongoing war
The list, however, does not name US Marines who died in March 2026, but rather the service members named in the list died in Afghanistan in July 2010, in which some were Marines while others served in the Army. The same list was previously circulated online in 2018.
Although more than a dozen service members have died since the war with Iran began, no credible reports indicate that 11 US Marines were killed in March 2026.
The Department of Defense has also not issued any announcement about this; therefore, the claim is false.
As of now, the Department of Defense has announced the deaths of 13 soldiers who supported the US's Operation Epic Fury, including six service members who died when a US refueling plane crashed in Iraq on March 12, 2026.
None of the 13 service members who died were Marines. Instead, they served in the Army, Army Reserve, and Air Force.
