AUSTIN, TEXAS: Earlier this month, a claim began circulating online that a man fatally shot his daughter after an argument about President Donald Trump, following which posts began circulating on social media spaces that MAGA dad Kris Harrison killed his daughter, Lucy Harrison, over political differences. Although the rumor is true, it is missing in context. Let’s fact-check it.

Claim: Father shot daughter after political arguments over Donald Trump

Following the fatal shooting that took place on January 10, 2025, claims began surfacing earlier this month that a Texas man fatally shot his daughter after they argued about then-President-elect Donald Trump.

The rumor began circulating on various social media platforms, including X, Bluesky, Facebook, Instagram, Threads, and Reddit. 

While the posts claim that the argument was politically motivated, other versions of the story say that the shooting was accidental. The father was either charged or faced no consequences. 

Let us examine whether Harrison was shot by her father, whether the incident was directly linked to a political dispute, or whether the shooting was accidental or intentional, and what legal action was taken.

Fact Check: Political motive behind the shooting is misleading

Lucy Harrison was indeed shot and killed by her father in Texas. 

Kris Harrison reportedly said in a statement that his gun went off when he was lifting it to show his daughter.

Although the shooting occurred hours after an argument about Trump, it was not directly caused by it.

Claims that her death resulted directly from a political argument are misleading. No official investigation found that politics was the motive. So as of now the claim is unverified. In case, of any new revelations regarding the matter, we will update our story. 

Reports about the argument involving Donald Trump come from her boyfriend’s testimony, but this does not establish a legal motive. Claims that her father faced criminal charges or was convicted in the United States are false, as a grand jury did not indict him.

A UK coroner ruled the death an 'unlawful killing,' but this finding is part of a separate British legal process and does not equate to a US criminal conviction. The coroner also disputed the father’s claim that the shooting was accidental.

After the inquest concluded, Lucy Harrison's mother, Jane Coates, reportedly told local media, “I never imagined she would be shot and killed in the US, in a place where she should have been safe. We respectfully accept that our two cultures are different regarding firearms, yet we feel Texas gun laws did not keep Lucy safe from harm.”
