Fans in splits as 'The Late Show' ridicules Florida school district's ban on dictionaries over mention of sex
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: In a bizarre turn of events, a Florida school district made headlines by removing dictionaries from library shelves due to concerns about them having descriptions of sexual conduct.
Stephen Colbert, the host of 'The Late Show', took a jab at this decision during a recent episode, following the footsteps of Jimmy Kimmel.
Stephen Colbert ridicules Florida school district's decision to ban dictionaries, encyclopedias and thesauruses
During his monologue, Colbert noted, "Ron DeSantis, Governor DeSantis implemented a law across the Sunshine State that tried to regulate any mention of sex in books out of fear that it would make kids cooler than he is."
He continued, "Now, because of that crazy law one Florida school district has pulled dictionaries from the shelves because they contain definitions of words such as 'sex' that would potentially put them in violation of the law."
"Now it seems extreme but you can't be too careful," further joked Colbert, referencing how footballs and Capri Sun can possibly be deemed sexual.
'The Late Show' host also mentioned, "Turns out its not dictionaries, they also banned eight different encyclopedias and two thesauruses," calling the move shocking and abhorrent.
Fans in splits over spoof video mocking Florida school districts move
Along with the monologue, Colbert presented a spoof video on the topic, containing a clip from the Florida Department of Education called "Danger At Your Local Library."
A subject in the video stated, "Every so often, I get a strong sex urge, and the only way I can take care of it is the dictionary."
Subsequently, the narrator adds, "That's right, the dictionary, a salacious text corrupting the minds of our youth. Its lascivious poison lurks on every page. Look here, 'supple,' suggesting the pleasing curves of the female form. Not on my watch!"
"Hamburger, hot beef shoved between two warm buns. No, thank you. Cunnilingus, Hmm... I don't know what that one means. Seems fine."
Soon after the video was posted on YouTube, fans of 'The Late Show' joined in on the fun and left hilarious comments.
One wrote, "I remember being in elementary school and my friends and I would think we were such rebels, looking up bad words in the Oxford dictionary in the school library. Florida is just crazy, in a very bad way."
"Florida has officially become a parody of itself," another noted, while a person quipped, "Without a dictionary, how will kids become cunning linguists!?"
Someone else joked, "I thought they'd banned dictionaries years before. So many people believe they are against wokism and communism and socialism but when asked can't say what they actually mean."
A fan of the show expressed, "Idiocracy at its best," and another added, "Only Florida would ban a dictionary."
