LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Fans expressed shock after images circulated online showing the condition of Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre following Oscars night on Sunday, March 15.

The photos revealed large amounts of trash left behind by attendees. The incident quickly drew attention on social media, especially because many of the same celebrities are known for advocating environmental causes.

Social media backlash over celebrity hypocrisy

According to images shared online, photos showed “mounds of trash,” including water bottles, snack bags, food debris, papers, and programs scattered throughout the venue. These images sparked widespread backlash among fans, who criticized what they saw as hypocrisy from Hollywood’s A-list celebrities.

One user said, "Why is it hard to believe? These are the people who take their private jets to awards ceremonies for climate change."

Another commentator added, "Typical Hollywood privilege. Picking up the trash is their support for illegal immigrants."

One netizen said, "I thought they cared about our earth."

A viewer noted, "Typical entitlement from the Hollywood elite rules and cleanup are for the little people not them. Disrespectful as hell?"

Another critic stated, "No level of fame should make ‘someone else will clean it up’ feel like a free pass."

Environmental messaging at Oscars draws scrutiny

Despite the condition in which the theater was left, several celebrities reportedly used their time during the Oscars ceremony to promote environmental and climate-related issues. Among those were Jane Fonda, Javier Bardem, and Leonardo DiCaprio, who have been associated with environmental activism.

A number of celebrities previously made efforts to “go green” during the 2020 Oscars by opting for recycled or previously worn outfits on the red carpet, highlighting environmental awareness within the industry.

Among them, 'Joker' star Joaquin Phoenix stood out as he accepted his Best Actor Oscar wearing the same custom Stella McCartney suit he had worn throughout the entire awards season.

He thanked the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for serving a vegan meal during the ceremony and "for recognizing and acknowledging the link between animal agriculture and climate change." He then pleaded with his fellow actors to do what they could to limit their carbon footprints.

At the same event, Fonda, who presented the best picture award to 'Parasite,' wore a beaded red dress by Elie Saab Couture, the same gown she wore six years ago on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival.

The actress previously remarked that the coat is the "last piece of clothing" she'll ever buy.
