Environmental messaging at Oscars draws scrutiny
Despite the condition in which the theater was left, several celebrities reportedly used their time during the Oscars ceremony to promote environmental and climate-related issues. Among those were Jane Fonda, Javier Bardem, and Leonardo DiCaprio, who have been associated with environmental activism.
A number of celebrities previously made efforts to “go green” during the 2020 Oscars by opting for recycled or previously worn outfits on the red carpet, highlighting environmental awareness within the industry.
Among them, 'Joker' star Joaquin Phoenix stood out as he accepted his Best Actor Oscar wearing the same custom Stella McCartney suit he had worn throughout the entire awards season.
He thanked the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for serving a vegan meal during the ceremony and "for recognizing and acknowledging the link between animal agriculture and climate change." He then pleaded with his fellow actors to do what they could to limit their carbon footprints.
At the same event, Fonda, who presented the best picture award to 'Parasite,' wore a beaded red dress by Elie Saab Couture, the same gown she wore six years ago on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival.
The actress previously remarked that the coat is the "last piece of clothing" she'll ever buy.
