NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Online fashionistas have taken issue with Kendall Jenner's assertion that she was the "first human" to wear an archival Alexander McQueen for Givenchy look from 1999.

Jenner was one of the most stylish attendees at the 2024 Met Gala on Monday, May 6, with her vintage gown that she pulled out of the archives to fit the subject of 'Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion'.

However, Kardashian critics did not hesitate to mention that Hollywood actress Winona Ryder had worn the same dress in a 1999 photo shoot for Flaunt magazine, the Daily Mail reported.

Kendall Jenner claims to be the 'first human' to wear archival Givenchy gown

The body-hugging Givenchy dress included a cutaway element for the butt and waist, and sculptural shoulders and neckline that hugged the woman "like a glove." That was fortunate for Jenner as she was not permitted to modify it in any way.

This is because it is a vintage item that was pulled particularly for the evening from the vaults, and was never worn before. On the red carpet, Jenner revealed that the dress had only been fitted on a mannequin, making her the first "human" to wear it before Monday, May 6.

"This is Givenchy, it's archival McQueen from 1999. I am so, so incredibly honored to wear it. I'm the first human to wear it. It showed on a mannequin," Jenner explained to La La Anthony of Vogue.

But soon after the 28-year-old made that claim, images of Winona Ryder appearing in 1999 magazine photo shoots wearing what appears to be the same dress surfaced online.

Some argued that since the women couldn't be wearing the same size due to their different body shapes, it was a different dress and that since it's a high couture piece, it probably wouldn't have been produced in large quantities.

While some speculated that Ryder might have been donning a slightly altered replica of Jenner's McQueen for Givenchy gown, others suggested Jenner might have been misinformed about the gown's past, according to PEOPLE.

Givenchy officially confirmed Kendall Jenner is the first to wear the archival garment

Ryder's gown "was a replica of the original presentation look," an industry source informed E! News, adding that the original had "never been worn prior to Kendall's appearance at the 2024 Met Gala."

The dress in question was originally created by Alexander McQueen as a black and nude tulle gown with a sculpted shoulder and neckline for Givenchy's Fall-Winter 1999 Haute Couture presentation.

It also included over 500 hours of hand embroidery and waist cutouts that revealed a glimpse of Jenner's back.

Moreover, Givenchy has confirmed in an official statement that Jenner is the first person to wear the archival clothing, supporting Jenner's remarks.

"Look 14 HC FW99 was not worn in the past, and was only presented on a bust form," the upscale clothing brand stated.

"Since then, the dress has been preserved in the Givenchy Archives until the MET Gala. It has never presented before, and it will go back to the Givenchy Archives," they added.

Givenchy further said, "500 hours were required to hand-embroider the dress, with more than 100,000 beads and sequins."

Netizens slam Kendall Jenner

After Ryder's 1999 image resurfaced online, social media users took to X (formerly Twitter) to slam the 'Kardashian' model, with several calling her claim a "scam".

One X user posted Ryder's 1999 from Flaunt Magazine and wrote, "What a scam, turns out Kendall Jenner is not the first person to wear this Givenchy by McQueen gown! Winona Ryder in Flaunt Magazine, 1999, wearing the same dress…"

Another user commented on the post, "Kendall a phony. We all know that. Kardashians don’t understand fashion on a deep level."

"So what’s the tea because givenchy and kendall jenner are both saying this look has never been worn but then this picture of winona ryder in it exists?" asked one person.

Another remarked, "It’s never been worn by a human being because Winona is a goddess"

"Winona looks fabulous. The Kardashian ..nothing special," chimed in one individual.

Another added, "Kendall Jenner you’ll never be HER."
