Francis Ford Coppola says ‘few have the courage’ to challenge Hollywood trends
Announced just days before the Oscars, the Razzies highlight what they consider the year's worst films.
Taking to Instagram, Coppola addressed the Razzies win, expressing his thoughts on contemporary moviemaking.
“I am thrilled to accept the Razzie award in so many important categories for @megalopolisfilm, and for the distinctive honor of being nominated as the worst director, worst screenplay, and worst picture at a time when so few have the courage to go against the prevailing trends of contemporary moviemaking!” Coppola wrote on Friday, February 28.
'Megalopolis' received six nominations at the Razzies, including Worst Director, Worst Screenplay, and Worst Picture.
Jon Voight also won the Razzie for Worst Supporting Actor for his roles in 'Reagan,' 'Shadow Land,' and 'Strangers.'
Francis Ford Coppola criticizes the industry for playing it safe
Francis Ford Coppola also used his statement to voice his concerns about the film industry's reluctance to take risks.
“In this wreck of a world today, where ART is given scores as if it were professional wrestling, I chose to NOT follow the gutless rules laid down by an industry so terrified of risk that despite the enormous pool of young talent at its disposal, may not create pictures that will be relevant and alive 50 years from now,” Coppola stated.
He further compared himself to renowned French filmmaker Jacques Tati who famously struggled financially to bring his film 'Playtime' to life.

"What an honor to stand alongside a great and courageous filmmaker like Jacques Tati who impoverished himself completely to make one of cinema’s most beloved failures, ‘PLAYTIME!’” Coppola wrote.
Francis Ford Coppola says box office ‘has no true place in our future’
Before concluding his post, Francis Ford Coppola expressed gratitude toward those who helped him create 'Megalopolis.'
“Let us remind ourselves that box office is only about money and, like war, stupidity and politics, has no true place in our future,” Coppola added.
The director is expected to accept his award in person on Saturday, March 1, a rare move among Razzie recipients.

Though 'Megalopolis' took home two awards, 'Madame Web' was named Worst Picture and also won for Worst Actress and Worst Screenplay, as reported by The Wrap.
Despite the fact the film was largely panned by critics, it premiered In Competition at the Cannes Film Festival last May.
