From Pierce Brosnan to Brad Pitt, 5 Hollywood actors who admitted their good looks created roadblocks
5 male actors who were considered too handsome for Hollywood
Eiza Gonzalez recently admitted that she was considered "too pretty" to be cast in major motion pictures. The 34-year-old actress received backlash after claiming that her looks had hurt her career. Jennifer Lawrence, Scarlett Johansson, and Halle Berry are among the other female stars who have made similar remarks. However, this assertion has also been made by a few of Hollywood's leading men. Pierce Brosnan and Rob Lowe both claimed that their good looks cost them roles in the industry. Here's a look at some male actors who carry the burden of being too attractive.
1. Brad Pitt
Brad Pitt played a handsome stuntman in 'Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood', and in real life, his looks have helped him bag dozens of film roles and an Oscar too. Brad's toned chest helped him land his big break in 'Thelma & Louise', although he acknowledged it took him three auditions to land the part. With 'A River Runs Through It' and 'Legends Of The Fall', his good looks helped in making him a box office sensation. He is also deemed far too attractive by several filmmakers. 'State of Play' director Kevin MacDonald remarked that he was fortunate that Brad Pitt withdrew from the project because the actor was "too good-looking" for the role, per Daily Mail.
2. Jon Hamm
Jon Hamm, the Mr Handsome from the hit series 'Mad Men', gained fame as the stylish man who could carry a suit. In an interview with The Guardian, the 'Baby Driver' actor previously discussed why he sometimes feels burdened by his stunning looks. "I bring more to the table than what I represent physically. And it's a daily struggle to prove that. Obviously it's a lovely thing for people to say… [I'm handsome], but sometimes it comes with a shitty dig underneath," he said at the time. Edgar Wright from 'Baby Driver' admitted that he wrote the role of Buddy with the actor in mind since he thought Hamm was "handsome."
3. Pierce Brosnan
Women could gaze at Pierce Brosnan's face for days, and his dazzling looks helped him get the role of a lifetime as James Bond. However, he has admitted that at times roles have been lost to his attractive appearance. In the 1990s, when The Times asked him if he was aware of his good looks, he said: "Sure, I’m aware of them. It would be dishonest to say I didn’t know what you were talking about. It’s a quality, something I have, that I respect. I carry it lightly. Looks are just there and they’re not to be abused. As an actor, sometimes they’re useful. Then again, I’ve lost jobs through my looks."
4. Rob Lowe
In an interview with the New York Times in 2014 to promote his novel 'Love Life', 60-year-old Rob Lowe made some contentious remarks about how difficult his career has been because of his attractiveness. Lowe told the Times, "There's this unbelievable bias and prejudice against quote-unquote good-looking people, that they can't be in pain or they can't have rough lives or be deep or interesting." Lowe initially rose to fame in 1983 with his performance in 'The Outsiders'. According to Lowe, his looks subdued enough for him to land the roles he truly desired.
5. Cary Elwes
According to Cary Elwes, his "too classic movie star handsome" look has hindered his career in some ways. The actor was a fantastic fit for 'The Princess Bride' in the 1980s as he exuded a movie legend appearance without even trying. Furthermore, as he has gotten older, he has become comfortable enough with his looks that it is not overly striking. That explains why he blended in so seamlessly with Tom Cruise in 'Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One'.
