LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: On April 20, a terrifying collision between two stunt cars on the set of Eddie Murphy's film 'The Pickup' left several crew members with fractures to their skulls and backs.

According to a statement from the Georgia State Patrol, an armored truck collided with a BMW SUV, causing both cars to flip over and resulting in eight people being hospitalized.

The back doors of the armored car opened, ejecting two crew members who were seated there and leaving them with life-threatening injuries, the Daily Mail reported.

Crew members were injured on Eddie Murphy's 'The Pickup' stunt set

An Amazon MGM Studios representative told USA TODAY on Wednesday, April 24, "On April 20, an accident occurred on the set of 'The Pickup' during a rehearsed 2nd unit action sequence. Unfortunately, the sequence did not go as planned and several members of the crew were injured as a result."

The production company stated that it is "still in the process of gathering facts on what happened and why, but first and foremost our thoughts are with those who are recovering."

According to Variety, the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees said that they are "aware of an accident that took place on the Georgia set of ‘The Pickup’ and have started an inquiry."

The crash happened at the Stockmar Airport in Villa Rica, situated around 30 miles west of Atlanta. The GMC C6 armored car was intended to pursue the BMW and apply pressure on the rear wheel area of the vehicle, employing a "precision immobilization technique" to stop it.

However, when the truck struck the SUV, its brush guard got tangled in the wheel well of the BMW, which made both cars swerve to the left and lose control, said the police.

The armored car held seven crew members. Two of whom got tossed out the back when it overturned and sustained "life-threatening" injuries, the cops informed. There were three people in the back of the car, and all three of them had major injuries. The BMW had only one occupant.

The police said that the five crew members in the back of the armored truck were restrained by belts that were fastened to the vehicle's walls.

All eight were sent to the hospital; three were taken to Wellstar Cobb Medical Center in Austell and five to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.

GoFundMe pages launched to pay medical expenses for injured victims

Fundraisers have been launched to cover the costs of medical care for Dolly Grip Marvin Haven and special effects expert Wayne Rowe—who sustained multiple neck and back fractures, a head laceration, and a skull fracture.

A GoFundMe page has raised over $118,000 for Haven, who suffered "extensive bodily injuries" and is currently in the intensive care unit.

The page states: "He [Marvin] is currently in the ICU with extensive bodily injuries, which includes broken ribs, multiple fractures in his neck and back, a shattered scapula, punctured lung, and a skull fracture which will require facial reconstructive surgery."

Through a GoFundMe started by his wife Lorena, Rowe was able to raise almost $28,200 after suffering "severe injuries" in the crash.

"Wayne's injuries are extensive, including multiple fractures to his L1 vertebra, a broken wrist that requires surgery, and a significant head laceration," the page said.

"It is nothing short of a miracle that he survived, and while we are profoundly grateful for his life, the journey ahead towards recovery is daunting and filled with challenges," the page read.
