WASHINGTON, DC: Gavin Newsom blasted President Donald Trump for throwing a "tantrum" over the Supreme Court tariff decision while calling him a “spoiled child”.

In a post on X, the governor of California wrote, “Donald Trump is using the biggest audience he'll get this year to throw a tantrum about the Supreme Court not letting him tax Americans with his tariffs. We've got a spoiled child for a president.”

The president imposed sweeping tariffs across the globe in 2025, but last week, the apex court struck down many of his sweeping import taxes.

In the ruling, Chief Justice John Roberts said, “The president asserts the extraordinary power to unilaterally impose tariffs of unlimited amount, duration, and scope. In light of the breadth, history, and constitutional context of that asserted authority, he must identify clear congressional authorization to exercise it.”

Trump found the decision “a disgrace”. During a media conference after the judgment, he claimed to be "absolutely ashamed" of the judges. He, however, then invoked a 1974 law and new global tariffs at 10% on most imports into the US.

Besides, during his State of the Union speech, Trump deemed the Supreme Court's ruling "very unfortunate".

But he also noted that “almost all countries and corporations want to keep the deal that they already made knowing that the legal power that I, as president, have to make a new deal could be far worse for them, and therefore they will continue to work along the same successful path that we had negotiated before the Supreme Court's unfortunate involvement.”
