CONWAY, SOUTH CAROLINA: President Joe Biden has stepped in to defend former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley against recent attacks from former President Donald Trump regarding her deployed husband's absence from the campaign trail.

Trump, while addressing a rally in Conway, South Carolina, on Saturday, February 10, questioned the whereabouts of Haley's husband, who is currently on military deployment.

Trump's remarks at rally spark backlash

“Then she comes over to see me at Mar-a-Lago. ‘Sir, I will never run against you.’ She brought her husband. Where’s your husband? Oh, he’s away. He’s away. What happened to her husband? What happened to her husband? Where is he? He’s gone! He knew. He knew,” Trump said on Saturday.

In response, President Joe Biden took to social media on Sunday, February 11, to support Haley, noting that her husband, Major Michael Haley, is currently serving abroad.

"The answer is that Major Haley is abroad, serving his country right now. We know he thinks our troops are ‘suckers,’ but this guy wouldn’t know service to his country if it slapped him in the face," Biden posted on X. Major Michael Haley embarked on a year-long deployment with the 218th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade to the Horn of Africa last June.

Trump has weathered similar scrutiny over former First Lady Melania Trump's absence on the campaign trail. He cited her need to care for her ailing mother, who recently died at the age of 78.

Following Trump's remarks, Major Michael Haley responded by posting a meme on social media, indirectly criticizing Trump's leadership abilities. “The difference between humans and animals? Animals would never allow the dumbest ones to lead the pack," the meme stated over the backdrop of a wolf.

Nikki Haley herself fired back at Trump, highlighting Major Haley's service and denouncing Trump's disrespect toward military families. “Michael is deployed serving our country, something you know nothing about. Someone who continually disrespects the sacrifices of military families has no business being commander in chief,” she wrote on X Saturday.

Biden mocked after sticking up for Haley

However, Biden's reaching across the political aisle to defend Haley unleashed a wave of mockery on social media.

"LOL, Biden sticks up for a fellow Dem," one posted on X.

"Because they’re on the same side," another wrote.

"Globalists support each other!" a comment read.

"Of course, democrats are funding her campaign," someone else alleged.

"Everyone is already aware she is a democratic candidate in republican clothing," another insisted.

The feud between Haley and Trump extends beyond personal attacks, as Haley has refused to drop out of the 2024 Republican race for the presidency, despite Trump's dominance in polls. With her home state of South Carolina holding its Republican primary on February 24, Haley aims to leverage her gubernatorial tenure to gain momentum against Trump, the New York Post reported.

Trump's critique of NATO obligations

In addition to his remarks about the Haleys, Trump's rally comments also drew attention to questioning the US commitment to NATO nations that fail to meet their defense spending obligations. The former president recounted a conversation with a foreign leader, where he allegedly stated that the US would not protect nations that did not fulfill their financial commitments to NATO.

“I said, ‘Everybody’s gonna pay.’ They said, ‘Well if we don’t pay, are you still going to protect us?’ I said, ‘Absolutely not.’ They couldn’t believe the answer,” Trump recalled during the rally.

These remarks elicited strong reactions from both the White House and NATO officials. White House Deputy Press Secretary Andrew Bates condemned Trump's comments, labeling them as "appalling and unhinged."

“Encouraging invasions of our closest allies by murderous regimes is appalling and unhinged – and it endangers American national security, global stability, and our economy at home,” Bates said, per the Associated Press.

“Any suggestion that allies will not defend each other undermines all of our security, including that of the US, and puts American and European soldiers at increased risk,” NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg added.
