By April, the couple announced their divorce, citing logistical challenges and an inability to agree on where to live as key factors.
Now, Turner is revealing another layer to their story. “There’s a topic I haven’t wanted to discuss until now,” he said. Inspired by his involvement in charities and fundraisers, he decided to share his diagnosis.

"I think it's time, also because it probably will clear up a lot of mystery around what happened back in February, March and April. As Theresa and I were trying very hard to find our lifestyle and figure out where we would live, I was unfortunately diagnosed with cancer.”
Turner explained how the diagnosis added immense pressure to an already challenging situation. With Nist living in New Jersey and Turner rooted in Indiana, the couple struggled to find a middle ground.
Gerry Turner opens up about his cancer diagnosis
Gerry Turner revealed new details about his life-altering diagnosis and its role in his split from ex-wife Theresa Nist.
Turner was diagnosed with Waldenström's macroglobulinemia, a slow-growing type of bone marrow cancer. This rare condition, which transforms white blood cells into cancer cells, builds up in the bone marrow and has no known cure.
Turner shared his diagnosis with Nist in February 2024, just weeks before their April divorce announcement. By mid-March, he chose to share what he had learned, taking the time to explain the situation to her in detail.
"Certainly, it was hard for me," he said. "But the conversation was brief and I think (she was) a little bit awestruck by the news. So understandable."
As Turner processed the diagnosis, his priorities shifted. “I wanted my life to continue as normal as possible,” he said, explaining how his focus turned toward spending time with his family, including his two daughters, sons-in-law, and granddaughters. "And the importance of finding the way with Theresa was still there, but it became less of a priority," he shared.

Turner acknowledged the public criticism surrounding their separation but hopes his openness provides clarity. “When you are hit with that kind of news, you regroup and realize what’s important to you,” he said. “That had a huge bearing on my decisions and, I think, probably Theresa’s as well.”
Turner remains determined to live fully and advocate for understanding. "Hopefully, people will look at things differently now," he said. "This wasn't a rash, fast decision—it was a deeply personal one influenced by circumstances beyond our control."
Gerry Turner embraces life's moments despite cancer diagnosis
For Gerry Turner, life after his cancer diagnosis is all about embracing every opportunity and living without regret.
The 'Golden Bachelor' alum, 72, has adopted a new philosophy inspired by Tim McGraw's song 'Live Like You Were Dying'. "I’m going to pack as much fun as I possibly can into my life and enjoy every moment," Turner shared. "And when I’m gone, I’m gone, but I’m not going to have regrets."
Turner also reflected on his short-lived marriage to Theresa Nist, which ended earlier this year. While their time together was brief, he cherishes the memories of their whirlwind romance and the "glamour and starstruck" moments they shared.
"I certainly wish it would’ve had a different ending," he admitted. "That we would’ve found our way, found solutions to the problem. And most of all, that I would not have had a diagnosis that so strongly influenced my decisions and the direction I went."
Despite their separation, Turner wishes Nist "all of the good luck in the world," hoping she finds everything she desires.
