Golden Globes 2025 Worst Dressed: Ariana Grande and Cate Blanchett among stars who failed to impress
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: The 2025 award season kicked off with all pomp and glory as the 2025 Golden Globe Awards took place at the Beverly Hilton on Sunday, January 5, in Beverly Hills, California.
As the stars donned their fineries to attend the glitzy event, there were a few hits and misses. While a few colors dominated the red carpet, it was the excess of some colors that did not sit well with fashion pundits. Here are ten such stars who failed to leave a mark with their attire on the 2025 Golden Globes red carpet on Sunday:
1. Ariana Grande
While it has been a long road since Ariana Grande created headlines with her fairytale-inspired 'Wicked' promotional tour gowns, the Best Supporting Actress nominee failed to make a mark on the first red carpet of the award season. As reported by WWD, Grande chose a 1966 Givenchy gown for her red carpet look featuring an embellished bodice and a champagne gold tulip hemmed skirt featuring a bow in the back. While the actress pulled off another princess-inspired look complete with opera gloves, it was the ill-fitted waistline that drew the attention.
2. Cynthia Erivo
Like Ariana Grande, her 'Wicked' co-star Cynthia Erivo stepped aside from her series of green gowns from her promotional tour and chose a different color for the Golden Globes red carpet. Though her silver-embellished black gown was not a complete disaster, the British actress failed to live up to her reputation of raising the glamor quotient.
3. Cate Blanchett
Cate Blanchett repeated one of her Cannes 2024 looks while attending the Golden Globes red carpet. She opted for the gold Louis Vuitton gown with an embellished boxy top that she wore for the 'Rumours' premiere in May. While she should be given extra brownie points for promoting sustainability, the dress's unflattering style put her on the worst-dressed list.
4. Melissa McCarthy
Melissa McCarthy's sugary pink look had just too many things going on at the same time. The 54-year-old actress got all lost amid the ombre pink ruffles of her Christian Siriano creation consisting of a pink two-piece set of trousers and top along with a dramatic cloak.
5. Elle Fanning
So yesteryear! Elle Fanning's attire for the Golden Globes consisted of a curious combination of a nude-toned voluminous skirt and a cheetah-print bodice. While the skirt was everything that was right with the outfit, the animal-print top failed to deliver.
6. Ali Wong
Ali Wong's red Balenciaga haute couture gown failed in the manner of representation. The red strapless gown was decorated with a multitude of red uninspiring fringes that suppressed the entire look. The only saving grace - the cute red bow tied at her waist - also got lost amid the mayhem of the fringes.
7. Eddie Redmayne
Eddie Redmayne walked the red carpet wearing a Valentino suit by Alessandro Michele which he paired with a butter yellow high-collared shirt. However, the white and black checkered pattern did little to pull off the understated elegance of his otherwise classic shirt.
8. Glenn Close
Glenn Close went all dramatic with a black fitted gown featuring structured shoulders and full sleeves. While you can seldom go wrong with black, it was the silver embellished script in French that barred the dress from becoming a slay on the red carpet.
9. Jeremy Strong
How much green is too much green? Jeremy Strong went all green in a mint velvet Loro Piana suit with a bucket hat of the same color. Opting for a turtle-neck white top, the 'Succession' star accessorized with a pair of green-rimmed goggles with tinted glass. On the second note, his look might have suited more for a Spring day out than a red carpet appearance.
10. Naomi Watts
Everything was right with Naomi Watts' black column gown with a princess neck until the pink dramatic skirt! Watts' double-toned gown featured a pink fringed skirt that bore an uncanny similarity with the gills of a mushroom, which did nothing to inspire.
