Hakeem Jeffries faces backlash for supporting Joe Biden's claim that Hunter Biden did 'nothing wrong'
WASHINGTON, DC: House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said President Joe Biden was "a loving father" when he said his son Hunter Biden had done "nothing wrong" in the investigation concerning tax and gun charges, reported The Hill. In a recent interview with NBC's 'Meet the Press,' the New York Democrat defended the octogenarian when asked whether it was "appropriate" for President Biden to weigh in on his son's cases last year.
In 2023, the president said that Hunter "has done nothing wrong" concerning the investigations against him. The 81-year-old's comments came before the first son was indicted on gun charges in Delaware and tax charges in California.
Hakeem Jeffries defends 'loving father' Joe Biden
"President Biden commented as a loving father, as I would hope any loving father would do. Hunter Biden, of course, is entitled, as was Donald Trump, to the presumption of innocence and to a trial by a jury of his peers," the House minority leader said.
"And this Justice Department is going to proceed in that fashion, present the facts and the law and then we'll all have to wait for a determination that is made by a jury as to Hunter Biden's guilt or innocence," Jeffries added.
Hunter is set to stand on trial on felony gun charges on June 3, being the first offspring of a sitting president to go to trial. The 54-year-old first son is accused of fraudulently purchasing firearms while he was a drug addict. Special counsel David Weiss of the Justice Department brought up the case.
The Wilmington, Delaware trial is expected to last nearly two weeks. Besides, the prosecution for indictment of tax evasion charges in California will begin in September. Hunter pleaded guilty to both gun and tax charges.
The historical indictments against the president's son could impact the incumbent's reelection bid for a second White House term.

"So much for 'no one is above the law' I guess this is 'D'ifferent," added a third user.
A fourth response read, "If this was not a political situation, then why would @RepJeffries even say anything about @hunterbiden accusation??? Political interference all the way."
Another person wrote, "Extreme Hakeem hopes his low information voters will believe him this time. Extreme Hakeem never tells the truth. Why doesn’t he agree to let the jury decide instead of trying to influence their outcome?"
