Hannah Waddingham reveals why she chose to shoot her holiday special at London Coliseum on 'GMA'
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Hannah Waddingham appeared on the December 19 episode of 'Good Morning America' to discuss her holiday special on Apple TV+.
Titled 'Hannah Waddingham: Home for Christmas', it was shot at the London Coliseum, one of the largest theaters on the West End, which was a place of significance for the star.
"Twenty minutes in (the show), I tell people why we are there in that building," said Waddingham, "It's because I have been there since the age of 8 with my mum, an opera singer."
"She was there for 30 years and I used to sit in the little box. (Now) my daughter is there, same age, 8, watching me do it. So it was the weirdest kind of serendipity."
When Apple offered the Emmy winner a chance to choose her venue for the special, it was an obvious one to make.
The incredible cast of 'Hannah Waddingham: Home for Christmas'
Waddingham helmed the role of executive producer of the project, which gave her a lot of creative autonomy to shape the show the way she wanted.
Her efforts were supported by a strong cast and crew which included London Gay Men's Chorus, Leslie Odom Jr, as well as people from the "Ted Lasso family."
"Well they all had to be in it really, because (the show) has been so much of a springboard for me, but also, they are giant Christmas hams," she joked.
She further added, "But then I also have the lovely Luke Evans (whom) I've known for 20 years from theater, and Sam Ryder, and two of my greatest pals on the planet - Scott Baker and Patrick Davey, who are the most glorious couple and my daughter's godfathers."
Did Hannah Waddingham take singing classes?
After a clip was played on the show of the star wonderfully working her vocal cords, she was asked whether she had gotten any formal training for her performance.
Waddingham explained, "No, I have not had any singing lessons... The thing is, when you have an opera singer for a mother, and opera singing grandparents, and then you sit in a place like that… you learn placement."
The location was this important so that she did not "have any delusions of grandeur, about all the magnificent people who do Christmas specials. I just thought (that) I have to make it my own, and I come from a theater world, so that's why it had to be with theater people around me."
