Harris campaign calls out Trump for attending NABJ event, says he has caused real harm to Black community
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS: The Harris campaign criticized former president Donald Trump regarding his attendance at the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) convention in Chicago on Wednesday, July 31.
"Ahead of Donald Trump’s conversation at NABJ today — let’s remember exactly who this man is. Not only does Donald Trump have a history of demeaning NABJ members and honorees who remain pillars of the Black press, he also has a history of attacking the media and working against the vital role the press play in our democracy,” Jasmine Harris, the Harris campaign’s director of Black media, said in a statement before Trump took to the stage.
“We know Donald Trump is going to lie about his record and the real harm he’s caused Black communities at NABJ — and he must be called out,” she added.
Vice President Kamala Harris’ team predicted Donald Trump would lie about Black unemployment
Vice President Kamala Harris' team predicted that Trump would make up information regarding Black unemployment during his administration, his handling of Covid-19, and the fact that crime in America has declined under the Biden administration after peaking during the pandemic.
“Black voters see Donald Trump’s lies and empty pandering for what they are — and they will hold him accountable at the polls this November,” Harris said in a statement, according to The Hill.
Donald Trump's appearance at the event sparked backlash from several Black journalists
Three journalists, including Kadia Goba of Semafor, Rachel Scott of ABC, and Harris Faulkner of Fox News, will moderate Trump's interview during the NABJ conference.
A number of Black journalists expressed disapproval over the for president's attendance at the event, questioning the organization's decision to invite him in light of his criticism of the media in general and journalists of color in particular.
The former president's invitation was however justified by the organizers who pointed out the importance of speaking with a front-runner for the presidency.
Kamala Harris will not attend this week’s convention in Chicago
Kamala Harris, who is expected to be the Democratic nominee following President Joe Biden's withdrawal from the race earlier this month, will not be present at this week's Chicago convention. She is scheduled to visit Texas on Wednesday, July 31, for a political function and will stay until Thursday, August 1, to give a speech at Representative Sheila Jackson Lee's (D-Texas) funeral.
NABJ president Ken Lemon said in a statement earlier on Wednesday, July 31, that the group had been in communication with Harris' campaign since before Biden withdrew from the race and gave her endorsement.
“However, we were advised by her campaign at the time that her schedule could not accommodate this request,” Lemon said, adding “The last update we were provided (earlier this week) was that Harris would not be available in person or virtually during our Convention. We are in talks about virtual options in the future and are still working to reach an agreement.”
Internet says Kamala Harris should be called out instead of Donald Trump
Netizens scorned the presumptive Democratic nominee after her campaign took a jab at Donald Trump for attending the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) convention in Chicago. One X user tweeted, "They should be calling out Kamala and her lies , as well as the Hill’s." Another wrote, "Yet she won’t show up answer any questions."
"Too bad Harris was too afraid to show up. She could have asked the questions herself," one remarked while someone else wrote, "Harris is a liar. She claimed she was Indian then changed to black."
