SUSSEX, ENGLAND: Dame Maggie Smith, one of the world’s most acclaimed actresses, has died at the age of 89.
The news was confirmed by her sons Toby Stephens and Chris Larkin on Friday, September 27, via a statement released through publicist Clair Dobbs, according to People.
How did Dame Maggie Smith die?
In their heartfelt announcement, Dame Maggie Smith's sons shared, "It is with great sadness we have to announce the death of Dame Maggie Smith."
"She passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning, Friday 27th September," they added.
Smith’s sons also revealed that she was surrounded by friends and family during her final moments.
"She leaves two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother," they shared.
In their statement, Stephens and Larkin expressed their deep gratitude to the staff of Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.
"We would like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful staff for their care and unstinting kindness during her final days," they continued.
"We thank you for all your kind messages and support and ask that you respect our privacy at this time," the family concluded.
However, details of the cause of her death have not been revealed yet.
