WASHINGTON, DC: Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Thursday, July 2, refused to let anti-Trump protesters derail a National Guard event in Washington, DC, delivering a fiery rebuke directly at them.

As whistles, horns and chants echoed through the gathering, Hegseth paused his remarks to blast the demonstrators as "ingrates," arguing that Americans deserve safe streets regardless of politics and praising the troops standing behind the capital's renewed security efforts.

The confrontation unfolded as members of the Trump administration gathered to recognize the work of National Guard personnel deployed throughout Washington under President Donald Trump's public safety initiative.

As protesters repeatedly interrupted the ceremony with amplified chants, whistles and loud horns, Hegseth turned toward the disruption instead of ignoring it.

"In fact, this background noise is PERFECT," Hegseth declared. "It's the sound of INGRATES, of ingratitude, of people who are so blinded by ideology, they can't see law and order and common sense in front of them!"

The crowd supporting the event responded with applause as the Defense secretary continued speaking over the demonstrators.

Rather than backing away from the interruptions, Hegseth used the moment to reinforce the administration's message that restoring order in the nation's capital is not a partisan issue.

"There's nothing ideological about this group. There's nothing political about this exercise," he said. "Law and order is something all Americans deserve. Black, white, rich, poor, man or woman from DC or far-flung places in this country."

He then shifted his attention to the National Guard members and supporters attending the ceremony.

Hegseth reminded those gathered that while many Guard members came from outside Washington, they were serving the entire country.

He argued that every American deserves to feel safe when visiting the nation's capital.

The remarks drew another round of applause as protesters continued attempting to drown out the event.

White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller and Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche also faced repeated interruptions while addressing the gathering at Meridian Hill Park.

Members of the 'Free DC' movement shouted through microphones, blasted air horns and whistles, and held signs criticizing the administration.

One sign specifically called for Hegseth's arrest.

Despite the disruptions, administration officials continued their remarks, emphasizing recent efforts to reduce crime and improve public safety throughout the District.

The administration says more than 4,000 National Guard troops have been deployed throughout the city to assist with security operations while supporting local law enforcement.
