WASHINGTON, DC: Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has embarked on a high-stakes journey as he joins a last-minute presidential campaign alongside Vice President Kamala Harris.

While the current political landscape is fraught with uncertainty, one constant in Tim Walz’s life is his unwavering partnership with his wife, Gwen Walz.

Married since 1994, their relationship has been marked by unconventional moments - including an unusual first date that could have ended their relationship before it even began.

Tim Walz had an odd first date with wife Gwen

Tim Walz first met Gwen when they were both teachers at the same school in Alliance, Nebraska. They first formed a connection due to their shared commitment to teaching, but it was Tim’s choice of a first date that raised eyebrows.

After deciding to go out together, Tim chose to take Gwen to see the thriller 'Falling Down'. The film stars Michael Douglas as a man who — overwhelmed by societal problems — embarks on a violent rampage across Los Angeles. This made the movie a rather peculiar choice for a romantic outing.

As one user remarked on X (formerly Twitter), "What an insane first-date movie."

Despite the bizarre movie pick, Gwen was not deterred. Although the film was far from romantic, it seems to have suited the two.

Tim Walz's rapport with students impressed Gwen

The story of how Tim and Gwen met is as unconventional as their first date. Both were teaching at a school in Alliance, Nebraska, where space was limited and they found themselves sharing a divided classroom.

“We had an old band room, and the school was out of space, so they divided it with a temporary divider, and we taught on both sides of the room,” Tim shared on Instagram Stories as quoted by Hello! magazine.

While Tim taught social studies, Gwen was on the other side of the divider teaching English. This allowed them to interact frequently, eventually leading to a deeper connection.

Gwen was particularly impressed by Tim’s rapport with his students, who were enthusiastic about his teaching. This would lay the foundation for their relationship, but it wasn’t smooth sailing from the start. After their first date, Gwen apparently refused Tim’s attempt to kiss her.

However, Tim was undeterred by the rejection. Recognizing that Gwen was someone special, he confidently told her, "That's fine, but you should know I'm going to marry you," as quoted by the Minnesota Star Tribune. True to his word, Tim and Gwen eventually tied the knot.

Tim Walz's partnership with wife Gwen extends to public sphere

Over the years, Tim and Gwen Walz have built a life together, raising a family and becoming true partners in both policy and advocacy. Their partnership extends beyond the home and into the public sphere, where Gwen has played an essential role in supporting Tim’s political career while also championing causes of her own.

According to The List, her advocacy for education and reproductive rights has been noteworthy. John Klaber, a former colleague from Mankato West High School in Minnesota, told CNN: “The country is sort of getting a twofer. They're both passionate, skilled, you know, bright people. And neither one is a shrinking violet."

Gwen herself has acknowledged the strength of their partnership. Speaking on the 'What If It Works' podcast, she recalled their first project together. "The first project we ever did together was Earth Day," Gwen shared. "We thought, gosh, we really have complementary things about our styles that work well together."

This was evident in their teaching careers as well. The couple established an annual summer trip to China for their students, even spending their honeymoon on one of these trips. According to the Star Tribune, their relationship resembled a movie plot: "He taught social studies; she taught English. He coached the football team; she coached the cheerleading team."

Decades into their marriage, Tim Walz considers his relationship with Gwen as the greatest blessing of his life. "My marriage to Gwen is the best thing that happened to me," he told the Star Tribune. Their strong partnership—forged in the classroom and tested over time—will undoubtedly be a cornerstone of Tim’s vice-presidential campaign.
