WASHINGTON, DC: Minnesota Governor and Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz has agreed to debate his Republican counterpart, Ohio Sen JD Vance, on October 1 on CBS News.

Vance shared his decision on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, August 14, in response to a statement from CBS News, inviting both him and Vance to participate in a debate in New York City.

"Today, CBS News invited both vice-presidential candidates to participate in a debate in New York City. We provided the campaigns with four dates as options: Sept 17, Sept 24, Oct 1, and Oct 8," read the statement.

"We look forward to their responses and providing voters with an opportunity to hear directly from the vice-presidential candidates."

Retweeting the post, Vance wrote, "See you on October 1, JD."

Statement from Kamala Harris' campaign

"Harris for President has accepted CBS’ invitation to a Vice Presidential Candidate Debate on October 1," read a statement from the Harris campaign. It went on to throw shade on Walz's rival, saying, "Governor Walz looks forward to debating JD Vance – if he shows up.”

According to The Guardian, Vance is yet to accept the invitation to debate.

Walz was announced by Vice President and Democratic nominee Kamala Harris as her running mate on August 5. That week, he said at a rally that he "can’t wait to debate the guy (Vance) — that is, if he’s willing to get off the couch and show up”, about the popular rumor that former president Donald Trump's running mate admitted to having sex with a couch in his memoir.

Internet gets fired up for VP debate

Netizens are excited at the prospect of the vice presidential debate, irrespective of the candidate that they support. The following tweets on X reacting to Vance's acceptance of the debate proposal demonstrate the mood.

"Coach Walz vs Couch Vance," wrote a user.

"You are a Stolen Valor coward," claimed another.

"You are going to make him look like the fool he is," encouraged a third.

"I can't wait!!!" expressed a fourth.

"This isn't going to go well for you. Tampon Timmy. JD doesn't mess around," warned a fifth user.

"You’re gonna spank JD Vance! Let’s go!!!!!" exclaimed a sixth.
