Hidden or in plain sight: Here’s where these 10 Hollywood celebrities have kept their Oscars
Here's where these 10 Academy Award winners keep their Oscars
Oscar is one of Hollywood's greatest accolades, and many celebrities hope to win one. Oscar winners Olivia Colman and Cate Blanchett have their trophies prominently displayed, but other winners have hidden theirs in less obvious locations fit for a scavenger hunt. People might be surprised to hear that some celebrities have chosen to store their golden statuettes in bathrooms, kitchens, and meditation rooms. Here's a look at previous winners' displays of their coveted Oscars trophies ahead of the 2024 ceremony.
1. Olivia Colman
Olivia Colman, the 2019 Best Actress winner, told reporters she would be storing her new trophy at a very particular place. However, it was difficult to know if she was kidding given her sense of humor. "In bed with me," she added. "Between me and my husband. He doesn't know yet; he won't mind."
2. Goldie Hawn
Goldie Hawn became an Oscar winner in 1970, taking home the Best Supporting Actress award for her role in 'Cactus Flower.' Hawn revealed in a 2005 interview with InStyle (via E! News) that she kept the award in her meditation room. "My award is in the room where I study and practice meditation. Sometimes it's on the mantel; sometimes I put it away," Hawn said at the time.
3. Jared Leto
In 2014, Jared Leto said that he keeps his 2013 Best Supporting Actor Oscar for 'Dallas Buyers Club' in the kitchen—conveniently placed next to some munchies. The actor previously said on Entertainment Tonight Canada: "The Oscar is sitting in my kitchen, guarded by some vegan butter and a bag of popcorn! You know, they kind of end up in the kitchen because that's the first place that I go when I get home. You put your keys down, and you take off your jacket … and you put your Oscar in the kitchen."
4. Cate Blanchett
Cate Blanchett once told InStyle that "life goes on" after winning her first Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 2005 for her performance in 'The Aviator' (2004), which may help to explain why her trophy was not on display for very long. She said at the time, "It's been in the study recently. It moves around a bit like my family and I do. I don't look at it every day, though."
5. Natalie Portman
Regarding the location of her trophy, which she won in 2011 for 'Black Swan,' Natalie Portman revealed to The Hollywood Reporter in May 2015, "I don't know where it is. I think it's in the safe or something. I don't know." She continued by explaining that she tries to avoid giving the figurine such attention and appreciation. Portman went on, "This is literally worshipping gold idols — if you worship it. That's why it's not displayed on the wall. It's a false idol."
6. Tom Hanks
Tom Hanks has won two Best Actor Oscars awards (for his roles in the 1994 film 'Forrest Gump' and the 1993 film 'Philadelphia'). As per PEOPLE, Hanks keeps his trophies "on the family trophy shelf, next to the soccer trophies". He added: "I think the World's Greatest Mom trophy from Mother's Day is up there as well."
7. Octavia Spencer
Octavia Spencer revealed that she had kept her Best Supporting Actress trophy carefully on a shelf in her house ever since she won it in 2012 for her role in 'The Help' (2011). She told PEOPLE: "For those new winners, you're never gonna wanna let it out of your sight. I keep mine on the shelf. But sometimes it's good to have it right there next to you. If it's your first time having one, you don't want to let it out of your sight."
8. Emma Thompson
The two Oscars Emma Thompson earned for 'Howard's End' and 'Sense and Sensibility' are kept in her bathroom. The British actress told TIME in 2006 that her two Academy Awards, for Best Adapted Screenplay in 'Sense and Sensibility' (1995) and Best Actress in 'Howards End' (1992), "look far too outré anywhere else". She added: "They're great big, gold, shiny things. They're up there tarnishing quietly along with everything else I own, including my body."
9. Emma Stone
Emma Stone informed PEOPLE that only one VIP is permitted to take care of her medal when inquired where she keeps her Oscars statuette. Stone revealed to Seth Meyers that she gave her mother her Oscar after winning the Best Actress award for 'La La Land' in 2017. "My mom holds on to it. It felt a little strange," Stone remarked about keeping the award in her house.
10. Gwyneth Paltrow
Gwyneth Paltrow's portrayal in 'Shakespeare in Love' earned her the 1999 Academy Award for Best Actress. Paltrow stated in a January 2005 interview with Contact Music that she kept her award "tucked away at the back of the bookshelf in my bedroom because it weirds me out". She added: "For weeks after I won, I kept it in storage … I won't even put it on the mantlepiece; the thing freaks me out. For some reason, I haven't been able to feel really good about it."
