WASHINGTON, DC: Former President Bill Clinton has found himself in rough waters with the House GOP after failing to appear for a deposition for the House Oversight Committee on Tuesday, January 13, as they continue to investigate his alleged involvement with the late convicted financier, Jeffrey Epstein.
As a result of which the House Oversight Committee has decided to hold him in contempt of Congress next week.
James Comer says House GOP simply wanted to ask Bill Clinton questions
The Oversight Committee Chair James Comer spoke to reporters on Capitol Hill after Bill Clinton didn’t show up for the deposition. He told the reporters that the committee had voted unanimously to subpoena Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton.
“This wasn’t something that I just issued as chairman of the committee. This was voted on by the entire committee in a unanimous vote,” he explained.
He added that while Hillary Clinton was set to appear on Wednesday, the former president had failed to appear for the session on Tuesday. He added that one of the reasons Americans wanted Clinton to answer questions was that Jeffrey Epstein had visited the White House 17 times under the Clinton administration.
As revealed in the files released by the DOJ, Comer added that Clinton flew on Epstein’s plane around 27 times after the presidency.
“No one’s accusing Bill Clinton of any wrongdoing. We just have questions,” Comer explained to the reporters.
Comer slams Democrats for being a no-show
He criticized the Democrat lawmakers who stand on the Capitol steps, asking for justice for the victims of Jeffrey Epstein. He said that none of the Democrats showed up for the deposition, while several Republicans were present.
James Comer revealed that the Oversight Committee had spoken to Clinton’s legal teams for months and had given the former president several opportunities to have a conversation.
“We will move next week in the House Oversight Committee Markup to hold former President Clinton in contempt of Congress,” Comer said.
Bill Clinton terms Comer's subpoenas 'legally invalid'
Former President Bill Clinton addressed Oversight Committee Chair Comer in a statement shared on X. In the statement, he wrote that the chair subpoenaed eight people along with the Clintons, but dismissed seven of them without speaking to them.

He also said that a legal analysis prepared by two law firms, which were handed to Comer on Monday, made it clear that the subpoenas' issues were "legally invalid."
"You claim your subpoenas are inviolate when they are used against us, yet were silent when the sitting President took the same position," he added.
Bill Clinton urged Comer to make the analysis public so America could see another example of the "casual disregard" of the law. He also accused Comer of "doing nothing" in his power as Chair to force the DOJ to release all files related to Jeffrey Epstein.
Comer on questioning of Donald Trump by House Committee
In one of the batches of the DOJ-released Epstein files, there were several mentions of Donald Trump and his association with the disgraced financiers. As Comer criticized Bill Clinton on Tuesday, reporters asked whether Donald Trump would be required to answer questions about the same.
Comer stated that Donald Trump had answered thousands of questions about Jeffrey Epstein. He added that he answered questions daily.
“You can’t bring in a current president of the United States,” Comer added.
