LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: HBO's 'House of the Dragon', a prequel to the monumental 'Game of Thrones,' has officially set its course toward a definitive conclusion.

During a press conference on Monday, August 5, co-creator and showrunner Ryan Condal announced that the series will wrap up with its fourth season, as per Us Weekly

This news ends months of speculation about the show's future, aligning with George RR Martin's original vision for the 'Dance of the Dragons' storyline.

Ryan Condal provided insights into the production timeline for the series' concluding chapters. While the third season is currently being penned, the team plans to start preparatory work this fall, with production expected to commence in "earlyish 2025."

When asked about the potential episode count for the upcoming seasons, Condal remained cautious, stating, "I haven’t had discussions with HBO about it. I would just anticipate the cadence of the show, from a dramatic storytelling perspective, will continue to be the same from Season 2 on."

This announcement aligns with Martin's previous statements.

On his personal blog, the author had expressed that four seasons of ten episodes each would be necessary to properly depict the 'Dance of the Dragons' from his book 'Fire & Blood'. However, HBO had not officially confirmed the series' length until now.

HBO's 'House of the Dragon' stands as a significant chapter in the 'Game of Thrones' universe, which originally captivated audiences for eight seasons from 2011-2019.

Additionally, HBO is exploring more of Martin's rich lore with 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms', another prequel set a century before 'Game of Thrones'. This series will delve into the 'Tales of Dunk and Egg', further expanding the sprawling world Martin created.

During the press conference, Condal addressed fan expectations regarding the Season 2 finale, which aired on August 4. The episode notably omitted the Battle of the Gullet, a highly anticipated sequence from 'Fire & Blood'.

Condal explained the decision, emphasizing the importance of delivering this pivotal event with the gravitas it deserves.

"We were trying to give the Gullet, which is arguably the most anticipated — well, I would say maybe the second-most-anticipated — action event of ‘Fire & Blood', the time and the space that it deserves," he said.

"Obviously, as anybody that’s seen the finale, we’re building to that event. That event will happen very shortly in terms of the storytelling of 'House of the Dragon'," Condal added.
